The final drive

The last drive of the holiday to Christchurch. Passed through Twizel (film site for Pelenor Fields), Lake Tekapo (pronounced - take a poo?), and Geraldine. Found hotel easily in Christchurch and dropped off hire car. Christchurch is a very English looking city (modelled on Oxford apparently) with a river, cathedral, and tram. Had dinner at a slightly weird veggie/seafood cafe restaurant place called Dux Lux. Then some beer (brewed onsite too) + wine in their bar while watching rugby - Herefor...

Edoras

An exciting trip out in a 6x6 toyota bus to visit Edoras. It was a beautiful day, apparently only 1 or 2 days like this a year with no wind at all. Stopped to take photos on the way. We needed to cross several rivers to get to Mt Sunday, and nearly got stuck twice! Three out of the last seven trips had resulted in the bus getting stuck, but our driver was the off-road driving instructor and seemed confident we would be ok. By the time we got to the top of Mt Sunday, the wind had picked up (as ...

Niamh's hol is over :(

... Ror thought he saw the shape of it in the water but wasn't sure so we left it. The next day though before we left we decided to go back to see if it was still there and I thought that it definately must be it so Ror decided to go in and get it. Lol there were people standing on a bridge nearby watching him go in. He couldn't reach it though and isn't the best swimmer to be able to dive down and get it so we went in search of a long stick ...

... flight. High winds, cloud, hail and thunder storms meant the helicopters were not coming out to play!

So we explored the other options. Beckie was feeling ill again, this time with a cold. So it was decided that she would spend the day in bed with Lemsip, a big bar of chocolate and the most expensive and out of date OK magazine in the world (apparently Jordan and Peter are breaking up????) whilst Rob went and climbed the Glacier. So after wrapping ...

... the 'transport' section which details the different types of transport in the history of NZ, and more interestingly the story of one of the most successful motocross drivers of all time (another point Keith and mum might find interesting, see the photos). Finally, one of the new exhibits on display was named the 'Antartic centre' documenting the expeditions made by men trying to conquer the north and south ...

... We climbed the cathedral tower to get a birds eye view of Christchurch, then got a hotdog and mooched around the shops. We made a fab lasagne (first time we´d had an oven since the trip began), and vowed to be up early so the girls could shop for winter clothing. They came unprepared for all temperatures below 20`c. Shopping took longer than expected, particularly because we found a second hand clothes shop with a fabulous range of shoulder padded jackets ...

... Laslow then brought us close together (Lois got some photos of me in the air). I was first to land and saw Lois flying towards the ground. We were both totally buzzing and cracked open a cold beer. We took our chilly-bin (containing beers) and had a long walk to Gillespies Beach where you can see the Fox Glacier from the shore. The beach was pretty much deserted ... we decided some beach graffiti was in order (see pics). Later in the afternoon we chilled on a bench ...

... ship, the Celebrity Millenium in port, but it didn't look like a nice spot they were in. Even getting into Lyttleton wouldn't be that nice, with the first view being the derelict wharf pubs. Weird that we last saw the boat in Alaska only a few months ago. 18 December Walked to Lyttleton for brunch in the Harbourmaster Café by the wharf overpass. Went shopping in the Riccarton Mall, then went to visit an old friend.

... Backpackers was the cute house we admired on the way by the first time! Once we got to the hostel, we were informed that we would be staying in a cottage across the street. When the hostel fills up, it is used for hostel accommodation when it's not booked up. So on with the packs again and across the street. But it was all rewarded with one of the most quaint places we stayed yet! A two bedroom cottage with a lovely sitting area, nice private ...
