... As a consequence most the walls etc. seemed crude compared to the finely chiselled stonework we saw in Side a few days ago. Finally the site was a bit of mess... the paths were really just rough tracks, the undergrowth had been hacked back but was poorly done and it all just looked untidy, which was a shame. The city is set at the top of a couple of mountain passes and was apparently a tough fortress since Alexander the Great gave up besieging the place in 333BC and moved on. Almost all the objects come for the Anatolian region and lot of the statues are from Perge, an old Roman town nearby which now is not much at all but in it's 2nd C heyday sported a huge 'theatre' which had lots and lots of enormous statues.
