Well we woke to Hurricane Bertha (or what the UK weather people described as the "remains" of Hurricane Bertha...seemed pretty alive to us!) but fortunately at 3am and 5am. At that hour Bertha was hammering on the roof and making a hell of a racket. By the time we walked out of the door of Poplars at 7.45am, it was just raining, and then only in fits and starts. Before setting off, we said a big thank you to Maggie. Another B&B ...

Hi everyone, I arrived back in the UK yesterday after a very long journey about 26 hours total - fortunately I didn't feel too bad after it, just a little tired! I've had an amazing trip, thanks for reading the blog, it's been nice knowing that people have been keeping up with what I've been doing whilst I've been on my adventures. Even whilst I've been travelling I've planned a few more trips - I've well and truly caught the "travel bug"! I hope to see you all soon and show you the ...

... certainly noticed the "downs"! From Goodleigh, the walk into Barnstaple was easy. The suburbs of Barnstaple incorporating the ubiquitous Tescos, Asda and Homebase are nothing to write home about so I won't. We received a very warm welcome from Maggie at the Poplars bed and breakfast: a welcome that included a big slab of cherry cake. We are going to enjoy our day's rest ...

... of the trip, helped by clear blue skies. We were walking through ancient woodland, both oak and beech, looking out over deep, dramatic valleys. Similar in some ways to walking in the Chilterns except here the valleys are deeper and on the higher tops there is heather covered moorland. With buzzards and ravens wheeling overhead, it was a magical two hours from Monksilver to Roadwater. We did our usual bit of road walking to get distance under our belt to ...
