day 8 - tilcara

... the same thing in a differnet way, equally fast and confusing. I would have my own room, for $25 pesos (US$6.50) rather than using the shared bathroom, he kept taelling me I could use the one in the private bath room. Obviously this was out of context and difficult to understand, plus I think he said I should tell them when I wanted to shower so they could turn the heat on? I´m not sure why, but I decided to go with it, rickety lock and all. I secured my pack to the ...

... to a jungle lodge for 5 days. We´ll be hanging around the South West then before we go to Lima to get our flight back. We´ll be back on the 2nd of June. I´ll try to get Bolivia in soon. We were only there for a week and really went straight to Lake Titicaca. We´re still around the lake now although we´re getting a bus towards Cusco, Lampa, in a half hour. 14 April

Tintilating Tilcara

... way to Tilcara´s ´Garganta del Diablo´ but it didn´t really rate compared to Iguazu, so no photos to show for the end result. Aside from all the sightseeing, we´ve started our culinary objective to finding the best Locro (a regional speciality soup made of any combination of beef, llama, intestines and then some corn and legumes thrown in for good soupy texture). The llama parrillas aren´t too bad either... except they struggle with the concept of ´medium rare´!

Tilcara vacation

... of the day was spent in a pena listening to music, shopping a bit, then we left that night back to Tucuman. This week Monday the 24th- Friday 28th- has gone quick and just fine. We had Monday off for a federal celebration or something but I didn´t do too much. I guess there isn´t really anything too interesting that occurred this week to tell about. I´ve been hanging out with friends a bit more, going to the plaza, drinking mate. There is some political unrest going on ...

The salt plains were fantastic and we´ve got some interesting photos... there was a lady there doing an arty thang with balloons which is getting exhibited! Also met some really nice people.... three French people who are here for 5 weeks Antoine ...

... the names Belgrano, Lavalle, Tucuman, Rivadavia and San Martin, at the very least. 6. A big cross on the closest, smallest hill overlooking the town. Whoever coined the phrase, "It's as much about teh journey as the destination", clearly had the village of Iruya and the Salinas Grande in mind. Both places take an age to get to, particularly Iruya (70km in 3.5 hours...), winding along thin, bumpy gravel roads that snake up and down and around ...

Life in the Gorge

... the top of the hill. On the way to the ruins we caught a few minutes of a high altitude soccer match - perhaps the Brazilians in training? For phase two of our "create your own genuine estancia experience with just a cereal box and a roll of sellotape" we're heading tomorrow to the town of Humahuaca in the hope of finding the last two horses in Argentina (we're unreliably informed that in Bolivia horses have been replaced - across the board - with cats). ... valley, being dropped near their home, like school kids for example. I was happy to do this ride by day this time, as we went up for more than an hour to reach the pass of the Condor (yes they cetrainly thought they were original), at 4000m. The views, again, were breathtaking, the road in itself is a piece of human bravery, and I could not get tired of the colours that some mountains were offering. Back down towards the Quebrada, we ...
