Rainy Days and Sunday Can't Get Me Down

... father. In every picture he is smiling; bringing color to every black and white photo. He lived life to the fullest I am sure, I regret that he is the one Chileno I will never meet. I will get to know him every day through his children and he lives again in their eyes and in every smile.

The tour does not end with the house we move on the shed where the animal feed, fertilizer, seeds for planting and tracker are stored. With much ...

so this is coach

the view from the window.... A three day trip to the south of Santiago, we traveled by coach a 16 hour round-trip *groan*. Coach travel seems to be a national pastime in Chile. Not surprising really considering the country is the narrowest in the would. You either travel north or south to get anywhere and they have no long haul pasenger train ...

Concepcion and Termas de Chillan

... then English measures, a fact that became extremely apparent when drinking cocktails in a very nice bar in Concepcion. Yesterday was the best though, I went with Ana to Termas de Chillan, which was on the other side of the country in the Andes, a trip which took 2 and half hours, yes thats two hours and a half to drive the entire width of Chile! Termas de Chillan was lovely, up on the mountains, with snow around ...

... returning once in the afternoon. There is no timetable. Just when The Man feels like it. The Transport en vogue therefore is hitching a lift. Helpfully, it is the law for everyone in Chile to drive a 4x4 pick up truck which makes hitchhiking with skis very easy indeed. The only drawback is that more often than not you have to sit in the back with your skis. Brilliant when its sunny, less good when it´s either raining or snowing, but as far I´m concerned ...

Terra Sur

... minutes to spare, it meant being droped on a nearby traffic island for speed but I made it. The train pulled away promptly. My seat had lotys of legroom, I was quickly offered a free newspaper, and coffee (900 pesos). I had a fold out table, airline style and was just getting comfortable when the ticket inspector informed me I should be in seat 32, coach 1, not coach 3. I was in first ...

Like children in a sweet shop

... strolled down to a large supermarket, where we wandered about for about an hour, exclaiming with delight (like complete dorks) to each other things like, ¨look, guacamole!¨, ´look, peanut butter!¨. Other pleasant surprises included pesto, sandwiches that didn´t have ham and cheese in them, pita bread, wholemeal pita, milo, vegetables that weren´t floppy, tissues, yoghurt (real yoghurt, not syrupy flavoured drinking yoghurt), and raspberry jam. In ...

More thoughts from Chillán

... accepted I cannot do much to change the injusticies in the world but I can live happy trying -strengtened my beliefs in karma, vegetarianism, spirits (not alcohol) and reincarnation -wondered why Chileans think blond people are better looking -realised it really is time for me to settle down -decided to live a happier, healthier life -learned new skills (painting glass bottles; taking better photos; making artesanal beer; writing articles in ...

Jokela School Massacre

It has been a great experience to work down here. The other week I was invited to a La Cruz del Trigo fiesta in the countryside. It was a funny event combining Christian religion and pagan respect for Pacha Mama - the mother earth. The party host invited me to dance corretiado - no idea how the steps go but at least I had lots of fun trying.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

We arrive in Chillan with the hope of Skiing. Our best mate from america told us the ski season didn't open til mid july, which we found out was a croc of ****, but we still thought it wouldn't open for a while. Never the less we decided to head up to Volcan Chillan for a quick exploration. The bus only took us to Valle Las Tardes which was about 15mins by car outside the ski village at the base of the slopes, and even here seemed to be covered with snow. We got ...
