Its been a while since i wrote anything here, im sure i have done some interesting things but they obviously didnt stir me enough to share them...

However after a painful month of school, which of course came with a rip roaring social life, i "graduated" - for want of a better word - and left the massive valley that is Quetzaltenango (the names get worse) and set out down the "volcano coast" on route towards El Salvador and the political ...
San Marcos La Laguna, Sololá, Guatemala huntjody... never seen rain like this before!!
We were transported down from the 2200m of Xela through the thunder storm and placed squarely back in the sweaty tropics at sea level in an old american school bus (the yellow ones from the movies)

Another two buses later and we arrived in Tilapa a small beach town, i cant really tell you more because i only know what i saw, it isnt listed in our guide book and it was absolutely pitch black when we arrived, it ...
Tilapa, Retalhuleu, Guatemala huntjody... is happening to me isnt even, like, "third worldy" crime. Its not like I am getting mugged in the streets or my pack is getting stolen off of the top of buses or my bag is getting sliced in the bus and my wallet stolen out of it. The first time i got my money stolen, it was through a super high tech, inside job. The second time, it was because a stranger was able to get a key into our house and come in. Random.

One more week in Xela. Then I go.

San Martin, Retalhuleu, Guatemala katywade... not be thinking of Guatemala. Instead, the riverbed was covered with massive boulders, which required a person to climb up, over, and down each individual one in order to progress along their desired route. In addition, the path became noticably steeper. With this combination of steep and slippery and rocky, there were many places where you had no choice but to scoot down on your backside and hope that you would be able to slow down when the appropriate ...
Quetzaltenango, Guatemala kimandjohn... way out of Xela, a group of 10 or so little boys snuck in through the back. They all worked as shoe shiners and were carrying their wooden shining blocks, their hands probably stained permanently black and their faces covered in black smudges and sweat. One little boy sat down on the edge of my seat next to me, to exhausted to notice who he was sitting by. When he realized it was a gringo, I could see his hungry, curious eyes staring at me out of ...
Comitancillo, San Marcos, Guatemala katywadeWe started off today by doing 'Cables X-Tremos' – a series of 8 zipwires across a gorge next to the lake. Everytime we crossed the gorge we got an awesome view of the lake on one side and a huge waterfall on the other!!! Basically it was ‘Go Ape’ but cheaper and with a much better view!!! (although less of the exciting bridges of Go Ape). To get to the start we had to trek up the gorge – this was when we started to doubt our volcano climbing ...
San Marcos La Laguna, Western Highlands, Guatemala sarahelective... 5 massage parlors, reiki/yoga/meditation places but none seemed open so we ended up going for dinner instead.

We ended up at a restaurant on the lake and had a mediocre meal (steak for me and vegetarian pasta with tofu for Leigh, and beer of course) - total was about Q180. The owner was a nut - he didnt talk much just walked up to the table and put his arms up as if asking us ¨whats up - what yuo want to eat¨. On our way out, we hung out with the dogs and ...
San Marcos La Laguna, Western Highlands, Guatemala astoriavslb... Mayan people and quite a few Americans who came down to visit and never left. We checked into a little hotel off the beaten path amidst maize gardens, greenhouses and shanty houses. Then we went out and planned to explore the village. However, we wound up parking at a bar at 6 and not leaving until 12. Actually, we left for an hour to go drink more beer and eat pupusas across the street. The pupuseria in Pana has amazing ...
San Marcos La Laguna, Western Highlands, Guatemala astoriavslbZozo.....
San Marcos La Laguna, Western Highlands, Guatemala micheleenHola and welcome to my travel blog. I'm writing to you from Xela, Guatemala, on Christmas Eve.

Sitting in one of the few sunny spots left on the balcony of my hostel.

Increasingly grateful that the worst of my hangover is behind me.

On vacation. Off the schedule.

I arrived in Guatemala Thursday morning and headed straight to Antigua, a touristy colonial town near the capital. I spent ...
