... three weeks she had organized her first spay/neuter clinic, and now she works with all the local vets. She had been living in SF, but she moved to the DR to decrease costs and allow her to work for Animal Balance full-time - a brilliant move. She's really a force. So we enjoyed a cold glass of water while catching up in her peaceful, tropical garden.

Emma also had some great recommendations for places to go, so after we left her house we ...
Río San Juan, María Trinidad Sánchez, Dominican Republic jesshiggins... define that, because the whole north coast is stunning. The beach is indeed gorgeous, with trees buffering the road from the soft sandy beach and a long peninsula of palm trees shielding one side of the bay. Shen was hoping to surf, but the guy with the surfboards wasn't there, and also there wasn't there any surf. Supposedly it gets very good in the winter, but this time of year it's hard to predict. He ...

El Parque Nacional Con Haitses, Samaná, Dominican Republic carlosjeremy... be a little slower than normal just because of the holidays, but, in general, my projects are doing well. My current projects consister of: 1) Teaching English classes to adults and those classes are very fun two nights a week. 2) The Escojo group, a health/family planning group for youth, is moving along. I am interested in seeing what kinds of projects we get into next. The students ...
Samana, Samaná Peninsula, Samaná Peninsula, Dominican Republic jayrbird... men with young half-naked Dominican women. Sunday was spent laying on the beach all day, which was wonderful. So all in all Samaná/Las Terrenas was a success. I can't say that it would be my favorite beach, though, mostly because of the lack of convenient amenities and the limited modes of transportation to and around the area. A beach with no consistent availability of ice cream is no beach for me.
Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic aprilrenee... national pride. Of course, despite the current trend to demonize and villify the Latinos - primarily the illegals - who come to the US fleeing war, violence, poverty, economic ruin, or simply in search of opportunity and a better future for their families (as did most of our ancestors from Europe and beyond), Americans seem to have little if any problem with those who can play ball, thus valuing at least one of the many ...
Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic chimichengaOkay, after a little searching we found the mother and the baby. According to the Marine Biologist very few people ever get to see the mother and the baby together but anyway the photographs do not justice to what we saw. After watching the mother and baby for awhile, it was finally time to head toward Cayo Levontado (Bacardi Island) where our lunch awaits. As you can see the water here is beautiful. We were served a typical ...
Samana, Dominican Republic mullinsca... I know you said you would also like to work with art programs, and in the town they are trying to start a dance troupe, so one of your secondary objectives will be the development of a sustainable dance group.¨ Oh my stars, I laugh as I write this!! What?!? Why?!?! I know nothing about dance. My skills dont go past the ¨Cotton-Eye-Jo¨ or the ¨Tootsie Roll¨ So I think that I should have been a little more clear when I said i wanted to be involved in ¨art programs.¨ Clearly ...
Nagua, Dominican Republic bradleyhaas... of the ocean up. They grow very rapidly too - one meter per year. The roots stick out of the water and are covered in shells & crabs. There are quite some caves in the park - we saw a total of 5 - the ones you could walk or drive into. We decided to leave the diving to the fishes, but for the adventurous tourists amongst us there are some that are accessible through ...
Los Haitises, Dominican Republic schlossie... the crater sized pot holes and the fact that our driver only had a tiny slot in the windshield to navigate the roads. Everything else was taped off with black tape to keep the sunlight out. 17 hours after hopping on the plane, we arrived at our resort: The El Portillo Beach Resort which is now the Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo. We quickly checked the beach and immediately felt all the ...
