Ica and Huacachina

We took a taxi from Paracas to the Panamerican highway and then hailed down a local bus which took us to Ica. A shortage of cash meant walking into the centre of Ica with our packs before we got a taxi, it was a pretty intimidating walk and we kept catching the word "gringos" and felt like we were being stared at so we ducked into a cafe and Chloe and Katie waited with the bags while Neil went to the bank. Once the cash was in hand we hailed a cab to drive us out to Huacachina. Ten minutes la...

Mancora

We took a Cruz del Sur nightbus from Lima to Mancora, they´re one of the most expensive companies but Katie thought it would be worth it to have a decent nights sleep - unfortunately the recline mechanism on her seat was broken so everytime she put it down it would slowly push her back to the upright position - not happy but at least there was one English movie and bus bingo to pass the time! We arrived in Mancora and were met by a Tuc Tuc who took us to a wooden hostel with reed roof a littl...

Dunes, Desert and Pisco..

Up at 6 in the morn in Lima to catch a bus to a town called Ica. We booked our tickets with Cruz Del Sur and we were right to. Fully reclining chairs and breakfeast served with a movie thrown in for good measure. The eight hours went fast but the destruction caused by the earthquake we saw in some of the towns on the way was terrible. Made you wanna just get out and help. The only thing standing in most of the houses were the four concrete pillars on each corner that were re-inforced by rebar...

Down time in Mancora and adios Peru!

... back.

Funniest moment: One Polish guy in the volunteer group helped himself to some potato one night at dinner before it was ready and the queue of 55-odd volunteers were in uproar! To which he replied in a high-pitched Polish accent, "who are you to judge me!?". Classic! (Although you probably had to be there...)

New food tried: Ceviche - raw fish cured with lemon and lime. Chicha - a juice made of purple corn, also comes in a fermented ...

A conversation in Mancora (Evan and Sophie)

... Sophie: Thanks, I´m still having a hard time relaxing since I´m on high alert all the time. Especially with the feeling I get from this town.

Evan: What feeling do you get?

Sophie: There just seems to be so much competition - there are so many people doing the same things in such a small town. Like there are so many Tuc Tuc drivers, vendors selling the same jewelery, and hostels right next to eachother. None of them seem very happy ...

At last some sun!! Mancora Peru

... was almost toppling turning corners. Then towards the end of the journey there was a complete weirdo sitting in front of us-he kept staring at Shar and then when i looked he just eyed me. He was the biggest weirdo-just sat in froint of us with his head turned back looking and saying nothing. We were quite freaked and were very relieved to get to our hostel safely in the end. Hostel is top class and has cable tv so will get to see some soccer tomorrow as its opening day of the premiership.

Just call me goofy...

... and wondering if this was all going to end with a knife and a demand for money (Lonely Planet’s ‘Dangers and annoyances’ section has a habit of putting these thoughts in your head). On the way I also realized that in all the confusion, I’d left the book, 4 Hour Work Week on the bus which was uber frustrating as I was just getting to the part about how to set up your own business, without which the said 4 hours is probably going to be more like 50+ based on ...

... prawn tortilla and fried fish for 5 soles.. about $2.50 each. Pretty knackered from our night bus here so we went home by 10 in time to watch 30rock & desperate housewives (which just happened to be the one I left off at before leaving home!)
The next day we spent the day at the beach in town... nice white sand and nice water... got a table under an umbrella and ordered a lemonade and beer which allowed us to stay in that choice spot ...

Sun, sea and surf

... Anyway, enough about the tuna, suffice to say that I enjoyed it immensely. So, as I said - two out of three ain't bad. So if there was plenty of sunshine and and abundance of lovely ocean, that means that we were falta surf. Unfortunate. The lads even headed to a beach a bit down the cost to try their hand, but a similar lack of swell meant an early return. And it is for this reason that I am leaving Mancora and indeed to Perú to see whether ...

And I´m off to Ecuador...

... my CS host, Diego and go to his house. Mancora does really have a beautiful beach with great, fun, waves. It was nice for the couple of days I was here, but I've definitely had enough sun, and going to the mountains in Ecuador. I hope it won't be too cold, but it should be a nice change to the insane heat. Anywho, off I go... paz
