Finally There!

Actually gained an hour after Miami- Lima on same Eastern Time zone but no Day Light Savings. The Tour Manager an Arch Prof were on the flight along with 10 other folks on the tour. We were all collected- wearing our little badges. Took a long time for luggage, but the belt was the quietest I've ever experienced. First impressions of Lima: a number of gaudy restaurants; disco; gambling with high neon signs- Vegas style; rest of buildings look like still under construction. A number of US chai...

Trujillo Day 3

Big production this morning trying to cash traveler's checks- again- not much cash. I needed to pay the bill so stayed firm that they needed to cash for me. The desk clerk sent one of the bellman with a bill to get change- maybe a nearby bank. So, I waited 15 minutes. Eventually, he returned, cash exchanged for check, bill paid, change returned and finally off to breakfast. Today is a light day since we need to be at the airport about 3pm to catch the flight to Lima. Our first stop is the Cas...

... fantastic museum called Museo Larco which was an archaeology museum with fabulous pottery remains from 2000BC through to the 1500s so we learnt loads about all the different cultures there have been and the symbolism they used. Like for example the Moche people who were about 800AD and worshiped Birds (their link to heaven), Cats (the earth) and Snakes (the subterranean world) which was reflected in the pottery. One ...

... the streets." This was my view the last time I visited Lima. However, San Isidro, where we were staying, is a relatively safe residential area and was within a 30 minute walk of Miraflores. It was very different than the rest of the
city. On the way, we passed by Super Vea, a mega grocery store on par with those in the US. They sold peanut butter, which was a substance we hadn't seen since we were in Patagonian Chile!

Lima had a very different feel ...

First Full Day in Lima!!!

... Aid but less sweet). Chicha de maiz morado is made from water and purple corn. The people who make it take the corn and boil it in water to make the drink. It's fairly good. After dinner the restaurant had a dinner show. There was a band and there were about 8 different types of dances that were shown. It was a wonderful show - very entertaining. I took some videos with my camera. At the end these dancers with scary masks came out and they stood really close to a boy that ...

... no turnoffs, I asked the driver where the terminal was. He said ¨en Sullana¨. Sullana turned out to be almost 2 hours from the border, about 40 miles short of our final destination in Piura.

By the time we reached Sullana, it was eminately clear we missed the bus (if it ever went to that depot in the first place). For those readers who have seen the movie Blood Diamond which takes place in war-torn Africa ...

... 10 US...I want to get to my hotel, so the $20 US works for me. Unfortunately you have to find all of this out by yourself, ascertaining what risks you are comfortable with and those you are not. Anyway, Mark and I got to our hotel just fine. I don't think Mark had had time to mentally prepare himself for Lima, so it was a bit of a shock when he stepped out of the airport into the urine-scented city! Thank goodness I cannot smell!!

... off, good nights sleep! The 2nd day was the hardest for me, we climbed 4680 to Salkantay pass, one of the highlights of our walk, amazing views over the pass greeted everyone when the finally made it to the top. We all felt an enormous achievement having climbed such a steep incline at that altitude. Most of us just collapsed at the top completely exhausted by it. Will informed us we still had another 5 ...
