Hoki and I were down to our last day in Finland. It had been an interesting trip, yet one that was always poised for disaster at the drop of a hat. My intent on going there was to see and spend some time with my two adult children. We also were staying at the home of my ex-mother-in-law. Part of the bargain of our stay at Helena's mother’s house was that my ex-wife, Helena, was not only going to be visiting at the same time, but was going to be ...

... like walking onto a Dr. Zhivago set, except this was a real place where the Great Aunt, along with her sister-in-law (Helena’s grandmother), and Down’s-Syndrome afflicted niece, Ija, lived. Turns out I got along just fine with the Great Aunt. No further trip to Lappeenranta was ever made by me without at least one visit to Kauppakatu for formal coffee with the Great Aunt. Helena’s grandmother ...

You set in the sauna until you start to sweat profusely, then someone pours a ladle full of water on the sauna oven’s stones. The water hitting the hot rocks flash off to steam, which really puts the sweat glands into overdrive. You then exit the sauna and go jump into ...

... how to bake. As the coffee shop is a period piece, it’s like going back in time to the turn of the 19th Century and walking into someone’s home. Very nice.

On the veranda of the coffee shop, they had an exhibit of watercolor painting by my ex-sister-in-law, Terttu Kivisen. Terttu was the first wife of Markku, Helena’s brother. While I’m a photographer and not a painter, I couldn’t speak to her technique ...

It was a short drive from the Lappeenranta train station to my ex-mother-in-law's farmhouse about 6 km outside of town, where Hoki and I would be staying for the better part of a week. At 87 years old, Aune Wolkoff had been a farmer most of her life. Born Aune Hostila in the village of Suomeniemi, 40 km north of Lappeenranta, she married Nikolai Wolkoff in 1947 and they had three children, Helena, Markku and Raija. Aune had lived ...
