Communicating on the Internet has become even more challenging here since the government has completely blocked Gmail – a huge inconvenience for many Chinese people as well as expats. We went over to visit one of the teachers the other night. Her husband is ...

Had a fantastic day with Anne visiting the Dafen Oil Painting Village. It's a neighborhood entirely populated with painters, painting shops, the occasional framing shop, and an art museum. We had lunch in a hole in the wall place at the edge of the neighborhood (much easier to eat at a place like that with Anne, since she speaks Mandarin). Then we spent 3-4 hours exploring the shops. A major focus of the ...

... towards foreigners. I was on the subway going to a restaurant with Gabi, a Chinese friend of mine when a middle aged man sat on the opposite side of Gabi to me. He started to talk to her in Chinese. She looked a bit annoyed by what he was saying. Of course I had no idea what he was saying as my Chinese is limited at best. When he got off, Gabi told me that he was saying "Why are you using that filthy language (English), you should be speaking Chinese" and some ...
