January 5-7, 2009: Vientiane, Lao PDR Traveling Down the Me Kong in a Kayak Ev**yone (Neil, Brad/Esth**, Sarah, Mary and I) had to make their way to Vientiane, the capital of Lao, in ord** to split off onto our various travel paths. For Brad, Esth** and me, it would be a sad end of the Sunshine Gang touring through Southeast Asia as they would be off on their way to Cambodia and then to England. The previous night had seen a gross violation of the rules of platonic friendship as Mary and I ev...
Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep chiapoe18th Jan 2009 Depart Vang Vieng and arrive in Vientiane We caught the 10am bus to Vientiane and arrived at 2.30pm - although Laura and Zoe nearly didn't make the bus due to some last minute shopping. However all was well and we all arrived safely. We took a walk from the bus station to find a room, the sun was high and boy was it hot. We finally settled on a rather nice place which was a little over budget but was only for one night and Daniel felt after 3 nights on a hard bed he deserved a l...
Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep dlzBreakfast on the terrace again. As we cross to return to the hotel a tuk tuk driver intercepts us asking us if we would like a tour. When I am able to say that we need to go to the airport and negotiate what I think is a good price, he is still prepared to wait two hours until the appointed time. Meanwhile we pack and go to see a surprisingly interesting exhibition of pictires of old Luang Prabang including a good photo of the King looking plump and regal and a drawing of the results of a cho...
Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep travelburnettWe've just finished up a long stay in Vang Vieng. It's a small town about halfway between Vientiane and Luang Prabang. The bus trip up was good, the usual delay in starting, but we arrived after 3 1/2 hours so we had plenty of time to find somewhere to stay. The bus dropped us right in the middle of town (at Melany Guesthouse), so we didn't even have to worry about getting a tuk tuk anywhere (still find it weird that they build their bus stations 8 or 9 km out of town in all the major cities ...

Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep gledipinnar... you can literally buy laws at the bookstores in the market. Some of them were translated into English, so we bought a few for their resource center. Apparently there are only 75 laws in Laos, so we saw quite a few I guess. I love to learn about new aspects of human rights which I have not been exposed to in-depth before. It can sometimes be really intense, so it was nice that she gave me a few documentaries to watch in case I was overwhelmed with the reading.

... morning, I was determined to stay in a nice, air-con room, but all the places were way too expensive. I was pretty happy with myself though, because I ended up talking to a tuk tuk driver and I asked him if he knew anyplaces for cheap, and like everyone in south east asia, he had a friend who owned a guesthouse and was having trouble filling rooms. After haggling with him for a while, I got him to walk with me to the guesthouse and talk down the price which was a ...
Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep mattliWell it has been a crazy few weeks. First, Laos is an amazing country with a noticeable French flair. We took an epic bus journey from Thailand to Laos, and first thing they did was hand out barf bags. Thankfully I didn't need one. But I've done so much in the past couple of weeks. I've been to incredible jungle waterfalls outside Luang Prabang, been caving, explored villages, slept in riverfront bungalows, and ...
Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep bobbyvegas... near us on the street were drinking and having a great time getting people on bikes, motorbikes, tuk tuks and trucks wet. The African guys a few places down were doing some "extreme" splashing. They were winding up and letting the water fly, it looked painful for the recipients. The older lady at the spot next door keep coming over to everyone at our bar. She gave us sticky rice and coconut milk in banana leaves, then we had to down some beer, then she got us wet a ...
