January 5-7, 2009: Vientiane, Lao PDR Traveling Down the Me Kong in a Kayak Ev**yone (Neil, Brad/Esth**, Sarah, Mary and I) had to make their way to Vientiane, the capital of Lao, in ord** to split off onto our various travel paths. For Brad, Esth** and me, it would be a sad end of the Sunshine Gang touring through Southeast Asia as they would be off on their way to Cambodia and then to England. The previous night had seen a gross violation of the rules of platonic friendship as Mary and I ev...
Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep chiapoe18th Jan 2009 Depart Vang Vieng and arrive in Vientiane We caught the 10am bus to Vientiane and arrived at 2.30pm - although Laura and Zoe nearly didn't make the bus due to some last minute shopping. However all was well and we all arrived safely. We took a walk from the bus station to find a room, the sun was high and boy was it hot. We finally settled on a rather nice place which was a little over budget but was only for one night and Daniel felt after 3 nights on a hard bed he deserved a l...
Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep dlzBreakfast on the terrace again. As we cross to return to the hotel a tuk tuk driver intercepts us asking us if we would like a tour. When I am able to say that we need to go to the airport and negotiate what I think is a good price, he is still prepared to wait two hours until the appointed time. Meanwhile we pack and go to see a surprisingly interesting exhibition of pictires of old Luang Prabang including a good photo of the King looking plump and regal and a drawing of the results of a cho...
Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep travelburnettWe've just finished up a long stay in Vang Vieng. It's a small town about halfway between Vientiane and Luang Prabang. The bus trip up was good, the usual delay in starting, but we arrived after 3 1/2 hours so we had plenty of time to find somewhere to stay. The bus dropped us right in the middle of town (at Melany Guesthouse), so we didn't even have to worry about getting a tuk tuk anywhere (still find it weird that they build their bus stations 8 or 9 km out of town in all the major cities ...
Vang Vieng, Lao Peoples Dem Rep varney... Site 16, which our guide had told us was just newly opened and he was very excited about because the jars here were made from granite. We didn’t find Special Sight 16 particularly exciting but we had a laugh about it.

Then it was time for some fun and I headed South to Vang Vieng, which is famous for one thing only, tubing! Tubing involves the Mekong river, lots of bars, some mud pools, trapeze swings and an inner tyre tube. Put the 3 ...

They charge ridiculous fees to withdraw money and the limit is somewhere around $200, so it's best to go ahead and pull out the maximum. It gave me 2,000,000 Kip. I've heard if you go to a bank to exchange money, they sometimes hand your money back to you in a plastic sack bc there's so much.

We picked up some balut, not real sure if I spelled that right. Vientiane, Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep tex25... was a nine hour bus ride north to Tha Khaek. Once there, we rented a motorbike again and toured around to the many caves in the area. The surrounding landscape was spectacular! It is very similar to Vietnam with respect to the limestone rock formations and mountains, but much greener. A highlight of our Tha Khaek visit was hanging out with a group of locals for the day on their family picnic outing. We had just surfaced from one cave we’d been ...

We saw a lot of Laotian nature, even too much! We got to Huay Xay late at night after a trip we will remember for a while (together with the one made in Bolivia), ready to cross the Mekong river to Thailand the morning after and take another seven hours bus ride to Chiang Mai. Soon coming, M&M's around the world, the last stop in Thailand
