We wish you a Merry Christmas...in the sun!!! Very bizarre and not the same at all but hey we made the most! We decided to treat ourselves and checked into the Lane Xiang Hotel in Vientiane equipped with a swimming pool..oh yes! It was great as well as when we checked in we got upgraded to a Junior Suite - Happy Christmas Team Smedders! The room or should I say rooms were HUGE and the bed the comfiest ever! Heaven! Xmas Eve we had a chilled out evening and found a restaurant to have our Xmas ...
Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep dawn_smedleyHi, We have now arrived at the capital city of Laos, Vientaine. The city is situated on the banks of the river Mekong (however when we were there it was at about 1 sixth of its size that it would be during the rainy season). It has only about 300,000 people so is very quiet and peaceful compared to some of the other cities we will see on our epic journey (Hong Kong, Shanghai, Saigon etc) It almost feels like a small town ( but slightly more cosmopolitan). As we arrived quite late from our can...
Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep jon-daniellaWe only had a few days here which was just right. Despite Vientianne being the capitol of Laos, there's simply no telling! It's pretty small and there's nothing of any note here. Quite unlike any capitol we've been to. We had a great time here though as we decided to splash out a bit and stay somewhere quite smart, so checked into the 'Lane Xiang Hotel', which had a swimming pool. Lovely. It also had a bizzare nightclub attached to it which was full of Lao business men dancing very formally w...
Vientianne, Laos, Lao Peoples Dem Rep justinparryLooking for a budget European vacation? Head to Laos!!! Sandwiched between Vietnam and Thailand, Laos is one of the few remaining communist regimes on the small blue marble we call home. Weekend last, the Vagabonder and Mini-V crossed the Mekong river and spent a lazy weekend Laos-ing. From Bangkok the two flew Nok Air (www.nokair.co.th) to Udan Thani, Thailand. From there the 2 bussed to Vientiane. (Well actually they bussed to the point that they were just legally in Laos, when Mini V reali...
Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep vagabonder... s all a bit of a mystery. Luckily I had Daphne to keep me company as Phonsavan is a pretty depressing little town. It’s just a line of concrete buildings and it was really dark, windy and actually cold while we were there. Most of it was destroyed during the Indochina war and there is still a lot of UXO (unexploded ordinance) which the government is working hard to clear. Everywhere you go there are little plaques on the ground to let you know ...
Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep nickyloo... some anti-biotics - we're making a habit of visiting clinics in each capital city, we'll try and make this the last time ! To celebrate we went bowling and I actually won the first game (Paul won the next 2). The floor was uneven and pitched the ball to the centre, which is very helpful. But not as helpful as the pin collecting machine which tended to knock over any pins I failed to hit on my first attempt - a couple of times I had to bowl my second ...
Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep emmaandpaul... able to get a hold of Wes. He told me to meet him in the middle of town at a popular monument. I found a travel agent and they supplied me with a fantastic map of not only Vientiane, but all of Laos. It was a short 10 minute walk and a 10 minute wait and Wes showed up on his scooter.

I hopped on we drove 5 minutes to his place. He has a beautiful set up 2 blocks from the presidential palace. Wes got me set up here with orientation of the house and city then was off to work. I was ...
Vientiane, Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep tex25... and drove along the first and only railway line in all of Laos. Other than that it was all about relaxing. We decided one day that we’d done enough relaxing on Don Khon and that it was time to go and relax over on Don Det (the adjacent island). Relaxing on Don Det was much better. We had hammocks at our guest house there, which makes the world of difference! Actually, that place turned out to be our cheapest accommodation is Asia to date ($2/night ...
Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep tone_n_erin... European influence, mainly French, mainly in the buildings and the cafes on the riverside but it is very nicely mixed with the Asian culture, making it a great place to just walk around and hang out. We spent three days in Louang Prabang before heading towards the north of Thailand. There are four ways to go to Thailand from here: 1) the easiest, by plane...but as we are supposed to be backpackers...not an option; 2) two days boat trip on the Mekong river...apparently very ...
