We are now approaching the Saxon "Switzerland" on the border with the Czech Republic. This is mining country and reminds me if the Colorado mining area. Silver and a bunch of rare earth metals were hauled out of this region until the mines died. The towns south and east of Zwichau are deep in the hills and now create the most incredible wood carved items and handmade lace. ... Gardena - sadly it was 9 km ! It was stunning scenery which I tried to appreciate but in truth I was stuffed. So it was a grind up the climb, but is made it. Then the massive storm hit - it thundered down in sheets of wind-driven rain which quickly turned the road into a river. Factories, large and smaller ones are unused, windows smashed, lots of houses with broken facades, and so on... When arriving in Zwickau, there were compare to before, hardly any people around, and Zwickau is not a little village.
