      Saxon silver trail

A travel blog entry by my-house on Oct 14, 2014

We are now approaching the Saxon "Switzerland" on the border with the Czech Republic. This is mining country and reminds me if the Colorado mining area. Silver and a bunch of rare earth metals were hauled out of this region until the mines died. The towns south and east of Zwichau are deep in the hills and now create the most incredible wood carved items and handmade lace. Gorgeous country as usual :) Zwichau is also known for the cars produced by the Horch factory - Audi ...

So after a very late night last night it was up early today to head out for a 9 1/2 hour excursion. We were headed to the spa town of Karlovy Vary- about 20 kilometers from the German border. The town was originally settled by Germans but now is heavily populated by Russians. There are 16 mineral water springs in the town, in addition to the many hotels and "sanitariums" where one can bathe in the mineral spring water. Each tap has ...

First night was interesting, we were staying in a 36 bed dorm so expected to see some ropey behaviour, but not feel it. Me and Fleur were woken up to the sound of crunching Doritos. Fine. Expected. Well the share bag of Doritos wasn't all they were planning on sharing. What followed was a two hour sex ordeal. I refuse to accept that there is anything ...

4 passes and a near pass out.

... the Nurburgring race and the Stelvio climb!?! I made it up to the Sella pass which was a 1000 m climb, and thought I could maybe do one more climb. The next climb was to the Pordoi pass, which is where the Fastau Coppi memorial is located. The Giro actually remembers Coppi as it goes through the mountain stages. A mountain bonus, called the Cima Coppi, is awarded to the first rider who reaches the Giro's highest summit. This climb nearly broke me and ...

      Stage8:Zwickau-Dresden 120km

... there is still a very noticeable one, despite 25 years have passed sine!
Factories, large and smaller ones are unused, windows smashed, lots of houses with broken facades, and so on... When arriving in Zwickau, there were compare to before, hardly any people around, and Zwickau is not a little village.
The struggle to find a place to sleep, the empty streets and the starting rain, did not help my moral.
The next morning things looked a bit rosier again, I ...
