      Euro Rail to Switzerland

... street but once out of the terminal we quickly found our hotel, St Gottard, which was very close to the train station. We checked in, found a bar on the street and then headed back into the hotel for dinner and bed. Nice day of travelling and Zurich looks like a pretty city, reminds me of Melbourne a bit too. Trams in the city center and lots of trees around, something we didn't see much of in ...

      Neuschwanstein Castle

A travel blog entry by jlmcclure on Oct 27, 2014

Up and about at 7am and after some brekky we took a taxi to Hauptbahnhof (Central Station), where we started our tour to King Ludwig's castle. It is believed this castle is the idea behind Walt Disney's Snow White castle. The castle is quite a way out of Munich so off we go. First onto a train with our guide and our 7 other tour people, all English speaking, good start! We were on the first train for about 15 mins and then we were all ushered off and onto another train for about ...

We had lunch at a Tyrolean-style cafe specializing in pig's knuckle (one guess who ...

... mountainsides. It was quite a break from the urban locals I’ve visited thus so far. After breakfast we headed into Hohenscwangau and all the tourist chaos to get our castle tour tickets. For being as much in the countryside as it is, with a constant stream of tourists from all over the world there certainly was no shortage of crowds. As you could guess the castle is a ways up the hill, so we opted to take a horse drawn carriage to the top for ...

... Louis XIV, that formed the architectural and decorative basis for several of his castles, and since Ludwig hadn't quite absorbed the economic truth that inflow must be at least equal to and ideally greater than outflow (lesson, Washington?) ultimately led to the court's bankruptcy and likely contributed to his spiral into insanity and his untimely, mysterious death at age 40.
Leaving Salzburg, we drove back into Germany and made what ...
