... to the parking lot and got on the road to Salzburg, Germany.

BTW, the Autobahn is amazing here! The rest stops are super clean, and many of them have a play area for the kids. We stopped at one of these along the way; it also had incredible views of the what our drive looked like most of the way. Now if I was only driving a vehicle that would actually go 200 kms/hour without shaking like a rattled aspen leaf :-(

    Auf wiedersehen,

    ... tour and the castle!

Once we finished with his boyhood home, we headed up a very steep 30-minute hike to get to his fairytale castle, Neuschwanstein! While the first castle was beautiful but not extravagant, the parts of this castle that were finished were astounding opulent! Since the castle was not finished, and Ludwig never married, the tour focuses on the rooms that were completed. The throne room was modeled in the Neo-Byzantine still and decorated ...

We were lucky because the sun came out just as we got to the bridge (we've been checking the weather all week and were expecting rain today). Next we went on a tour of Neuschwanstein. This castle was the dream home of King Ludwig II, sometimes called Mad King Ludwig. He became king at 18 years of age and was ill-prepared for it. ...

... king and queen. While this castle was impressive, it could not hold a candle to the Neuschwanstein castle, which we toured next. Sitting atop an intimidating mountain which took at least 30 minutes to climb, the newer castle was stunning and was rightfully used as the model for the Disney castle. Although the interior was not completed before the king's questionable death after he was declared mad, what was finished was almost as breathtaking ...

... was never fully finished inside. On the drive back, we went along the German side of the Alps and stopped at some villages as well as a Monastery where the monks brew some really strong beer. After buying some for Courtney's birthday, out guide also treated us to some little chocolates that could knock you to the floor. The chocolate balls came in white, milk and dark chocolate and were filled with a very potent liqueur. ...
