I've arrived!

Not much to write yet, but have arrived safely. Think I've picked up my first mozzy bite - that has taken all of 3 hours! First of many I'm sure......

I am reminded that, rather like Guinness tasting better in Ireland than anywhere else, the same goes for Thai Green Curry.
Early night tonight for me. Looking forward to Sandra and Tara arriving tomorrow.

Temples, river, rooftops and cocktails!

Bangkok has been great and a very cruisey start to my trip. Sandra and Tara arrived on Sunday morning while I was having breakfast, (hurrah, the hotel does decent coffee so I had lots!). We spent the day in Bangkok, first at Jim Thompson's house. He was an architect who moved to Thailand after the Second World War and built a traditional Thai teak home which he filled with Thai antiques and treasures. He also set up a silk company in Bangkok. He disappeared without trace in 1967 while walking...

I Heart Farang

Ahh, Thailand. Our home away from home (away from home) in SE Asia. When we were last in this region Bangkok was the hub for most of our planning and travel and as a consequence is nicely familiar. When you leave the airport there is an unmistakable smell and climate and general air to the place that lets you know you've arrived! We landed just after dark and quickly found a taxi to take us to our guesthouse. Problem is, the Lamphu Tree House is notoriously difficult to find and even though w...

Day One !

11 hour flight from heathrow was actually not too bad, EVA airways are very good value for money. Plenty of legroom and decent food and entertainment system made the journey bearable. Touched down at just gone 3pm local time. Walking off the plane was like walking into a sauna.... the heat was glorious. Loved the fact that as soon as you came off the plane you could walk into a room to have a cigarette..... ha ha. Took us about 40 mins in a taxi to get to our hotel... slight mix up with the t...

Ros: Just a very quick entry to say we've arrived in Bangkok safe and sound. Our journey here was scarily without drama (is it a bit weird that we get nervous when things *don't go wrong?*). They cocked up our veggie meal on the second leg of the flight, but I wasn't hungry anyway. One look at airline food normally has that effect.

Our hotel is nice - and, most importantly, walking distance to Mai Kaidee's restaurant :) Unfortunately I've had my predictable post-flight migraine so I'v...

Bangkok.....luvvliiiie jubblliieee!

Greetings from Bangkok!!! We have now been in Bangkok for an extremely busy 24 hours! We arrived yesterday afternoon at our beautiful little hotel ready to drop... but we managed to stay awake and do a bit of exploring. What a culture shock! Bangkok is such an exciting city.... so much hustle and bustle and random goings on! Words cannot explain how hot it is here! First stop was the backpacker mecca of the Khao San Road (Bangkok's answer to Regent Road in GY lol). Khao San is a mixture of do...

Small Luxuries & Curries

Finally in Southeast-Asia: a place where the USD goes much further and backpacking becomes close to a luxury; with 1-hour massages for $10 and full meals for $2 we feel on top of our game again. Even our hotel would probably cost around $100 anywhere else, but here in Bangkok its only $28 and that includes breakfast! (http://www.lamphutreehotel.com/ is highly recommended). Of course its not only the prices that we love here, but about everything else: - the smells on the street that can chang...

2 Tuk Tuks, A Rabbit and some Bling-A Fable

A visit to this big (12m+) city was not on our initial itinerary but made necessary because of the deal received from Bangkok Airways that allows us to fly very cheaply on some other routes. Bangkok Airways is one of the nicest airlines in Asia (a "boutique" airline) and has some great perks. Among those perks is the playing of Chuck Berry's (?) "I Feel Good" each time the plane hits turbulence (a lot in this climate!). As Steve observed, might as well go down in flames feeling happy. But on ...

Her eyes happy and full with life still, talking to me, analysing my Farang male soul, goiing on and on like the endless narative inside my head that by now is getting quite drunk I might add. Nong is a woman who started her life back in the Isaan minding water buffalo and playing with her ...
