Waigani City Centre Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 675-323-2333
... is a lot more chilled out and is seen as been the most tourist oriented city in the country. The town is in a very picturesque location with a huge harbour with loads of tropical islands dotted about. There's still hardly any white people in the town and those who are there are generally either missionaries or there for the diving. The town looks a bit sorry for itself and could do with a bit of TLC. The roads are ...
Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea beatentrack... the sloped sides covered with grass, and the interior filled with forest. Then towering thunderheads on both sides. Scary!
But we landed safely in the rain at Moresby. We were met by Shelly, the woman who coordinated much of our trip, plus two drivers, who did not drive us to the hotel but instead hailed the Gateway van and placed us inside before waving good-by. Well, I don’t think we needed help to do that, but it was nice in case something ...
... a waiting game choosing when we would go to the toilet. It was hard enough trying to dodge all the sleepin people - half sprawled into the aisles. i seriously hate the sound those aeroplane toilets make when they flush. its like a phobia. For "dessert" we got Ham, Cheese and Mustard Pickle Sandwich on Wholegrain Bread (i would have made dad proud eating a sanga not on white bread :P). There was also vanilla cream yoghurt which was yummmmmy. I ...
Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea surledep... anyway. Gates closed and manned by militia carrying M-16s. They let us into grounds as we all had tickets. At terminal the doors are locked so we stand outside in the heat waiting for something to happen. 0930 hrs - They open the doors and let us in to check-in (air-conditioning off - 100% humidity). 1100 hrs - They open customs/immigration 1300 hrs - Finally get on plane back to Brisbane. What a trip!
Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea stevegrace... At one of the uphill parts, Shaz and Daniel went ahead with some of the Buna Boys while we continued steadily along behind. At one stage we were heading down a particularly steep stretch with lots of tree roots when we were overtaken by a bunch of children about 6-10 years old who RAN barefoot past us laughing their heads off. It was tempting to take them out with our hiking poles - but they were too fast! Eventually we reached ...
Ua-Ule Creek, Papua New Guinea stevegrace... Rachel and Bethany woke up on Saturday feeling sick again. We still wanted to go, so Daniel, Luke, David, Jena and I went out! It was so much fun! We drove out there at about 9am and it took us an hour to get there. The lady that runs the place got there right after we did and we found out that they were only opening the place up for us! It started raining as soon as we arrived, so the lady opened up the main house and made us all tea and coffee with cookies until ...
Alotau, Papua New Guinea mgibb05... youth camp we are going to be holding when we get back from the Trobriand Islands, so that is consuming most of our time. We, the interns, were also in charge of all the RI's this week, so Luke and I have done them all up until today. Thursday we had several meetings and Rachel and Bethany were getting better. After our camp meeting, we were supposed to take food to the hospital, but Daniel was not feeling well and Rachel and Bethany were still tired so they all went to take a ...
Alotau, Papua New Guinea mgibb05... cokes.sodas.whatever...in the raffle thing they do. They have some of the best sodas over here! Saturday was our off day and we went to the beach with the Ford family and the Reese family! We drove for about an hour and a half to get out there, but it was really worth it! The beach we mostly coral, but we got to snorkel! I have never done it before, but other than the fact that I am completely petrified by deep water that I cannot see ...
