... across in a city and the old lung choking, dirty air is a thing of the past!
Savar, where the main branch of the CRP is based is a market town and is always busy and on the go, yet they all had time to chat to us and ask us to take their photo! The funniest incident was when Sophia, Pete and I were out for a walk and someone wanted to chat to us, he opened the conversation by shaking Pete's hand and asking "Excuse me Sir, are you a foreigner?" We thought it ...
... way round through Tibet to potentially face another dead end, or hitch-hiking on a plane. We have no idea where we will be when we send our next message, nor where we will spend this year's Christmas. Evan leaves us this afternoon and makes for Calcutta, from where he will fly to Bangkok and catch a bus up to Laos to spend Christmas with his folks. For us, the most important thing is that we will be together and, oh yes, we will be singing carols.
Dhaka City, Dhaka, Bangladesh steveandwill... statistics would say that is truly is the most densely populated country in the world if you do not count Singapore...). I had a chance to wander the street of Binani, which is one of the nicer neighborhoods near where I live, which is surprisingly clean and lots of good shopping. Marci, Lisa and I went shopping for Salwar Kamis, the traditional dress in Bangladesh and most of India, and we even stumbled upon a gelateria... so now I know that I have a place to escape when I ...
Dhaka, Bangladesh sarafulbrightWhen in Bangladesh everything is an adventure. The simplest outing or task becomes a drama accompanied by laughter, sighs, and confusion. We've been in the Bangladesh flood plains volunteering with Hands On for a week now and above all else this week has been a cultural experience. I'm working hard to adopt the Bangladeshi "way" and am happy to report that even when situations are trying and overwhelming, I usually emerge with a smile on my face. Here is an assortment of ...
Reyenda, Bangladesh hancocjb... was the first time my dad had met Marie. We were very glad to have got there finally. My brother also managed to time his trip to coenside with ours, so we got to spend the time with him and his family. After our first lunch together, we went to say hi to all the other extended family, who all live within the grounds of the original family home. Saying hi was an extended affair, as it was the first time they had met Marie.
Sylhet, Bangladesh marie_mc... and how the shared toilets work and such. We also went to a large government run hospital called Dhaka Medical College Hospital which again was absolutely how shall I put it? Sad? Miserable? Disgusting? The condition of the hospital was terrible. People were lining up on the floor, with 2 people to a bed, the hospital is supposed to be free but because of corruption, the higher level ...
Dhaka, Bangladesh raisa... perilously from the side of the bus. They have a complex series of knocks (delivered to the side of the bus) that enables them to communicate with the driver (you generally can't hear much else over the chugging engines). Some even has metal batons with which they zealously attack other buses that get too close. Believe me, this happens often and I've never seen such beaten up old wrecks in any other country - the buses are more bog than metal! Mind you ...
Dhaka, Bangladesh tsargood... 11 - Moulvibazar, Dikirpar Bazaar Cattle Market The quest for our baby bull led us to yet another cattle market, this time in my dads home town, where both my uncle and dad were confident we would find the right breed of bull. I had no idea what they're looking for but went along pretending anyway. We picked out 2 bulls that I liked and my uncle inspected them closely and said both we good. So we started bargaining with ...
Sylhet, Bangladesh kaled00... Greatest Escape since Steve McQueen rode his motorbike into a barbed-wire fence. And finally there is still the decision to be made about just where 'Mr & Mrs R's On Tour' goes from there. But don't worry - the fire ain't dead yet, baby! Stay tuned for our Thrilling 31.
