Historical Traveler Reviews of Lake Plaza Rotorua Hotel
Great hotel
from Niffer56
Hotel's location is great, right on the lake and next to the spa. Room was clean, bathroom spacious and staff was friendly. They have little jacuzzi's that you can reserve for private use, which was nice & relaxing (minus the children screaming in the pool next door). Information center in town offers info on all there is to do in Rotorua. Definetely lots to do.
Great deal in best location, right by the lake!

We liked the Lake Plaza hotel for the location (right on the lake) and price. The website listed a "breakaway" rate of NZ$99, about $66, a great bargain! The room was clean and large, the bed was firm. Smal refrigerator provided. Easy walk to most sights. Special deal on Maori dinner and show right in the hotel. Helpful staff.
Enjoyable stay

Lake Plaza is a very large hotel but manages to keep a very high standard. Reception staff are excellent. Room service is quick and food (breakfasts) were plentiful. Situated right on the lake the smell can be a little overpowering at times but then the magnificent view from a second floor room makes up for it. A small swimming pool is located off the car park along with (unfortunately)very dated spas.
Rooms are large and beds are very comfortable, stayed with husband and two children and didn't feel like we were living on top of each other. Rooms cleaned to a high standard each day.
Lake Plaza is right along from the Polynisian Spa.
Modern hotel in an excellent location

Spent two nights in the Lake Plaza and really enjoyed it.
The rooms are bright and modern and very clean. The hotel is well designed, some rooms are in a separate building. Car parking is partly in the road outside. A 10 minute walk into the centre. A very nice restaurant with excellent food and attentive service. There is a distinct smell over the whole of Rotorua but not overpowering. Do not bother with the Sulphur Flats (an ex rubbish dump) but the thermal area at Kuirau Park is just the other side of the town and worth a free visit.
A Great Place To Stay !!!!

My Husband , our 6 year old son and I stayed at the Lake Plaza Hotel for 2 nights and we thought it was GREAT! We stayed on the "Weekend Breakaway Special" which they have which was great value for money as our son was able to stay for free and he also got to have free breakfast as well at The Hotel! The room was nice, and the furnishings were nice. The rooms were also VERY clean and the whole Hotel was clean as well. The staff were all VERY friendly and professional as well. I ordered room service and this was delivered to me within the time they said it would be, and it was all presented very nice and cooked nicely as well. I ordered extra towels and these were brought to me within 10 mins of my phone call! The Breakfast was AMAZING, the variety, was wonderful and the food was all cooked and presented really well. The tables are also set for breakfast in a "nice and homely" way, as well I thought! We were on the weekend Breakaway special and our Breakfast was half price to usual, and we also had discounts off evening meals too. The water pressure in the shower was good, and we could`nt even hear showers running or people walking around as you often hear in other Hotels. It was a really good experience. My only complaint was, that we went in the middle of Summer and our room did not have enough windows for adequate ventilation for a hot day, although it did have a fan but this was not enough. We were also by the road, which was quite noisy, but heaps of the rooms are not roadside rooms. But all in all, it was wonderful, and we will DEFINATLY be back again!
Good value

I had a standard room ($90 NZ). It contained 2 double beds, a separate bathroom, a terrace and tea/coffee making facilities and a fridge. The was very clean and tidy. Good location - 5 min walk to town and on the lake front. Check out time was 11am, great for that sleep-in on Sunday morning. No complaints. I'd recommend it and stay there again myself. Incidentally, cousins were staying at the Ibis (about $30 NZ a night dearer) and their room was smaller, no terrace and only a shower, no bath.
Poor quality

The position next to the lake was very good but the room we stayed in although quite large was very tired and the bathroom was terrible also it had not been cleaned properly for months looking at the grime on the windows, Breakfast was quite good the evening meal was very average not impressed at best a 1 star hotel.
Good base for Rotorua
from White-family
Stayed for two nights at the Lake Plaza in March 2005, it is a very well run hotel in a good location near the lake in Rotorua. Equivalent to a 4 star hotel in UK. Caters for coach parties so busy. Went to a Hangi evening there, touristy but good fun. Rotorua is really interesting, geothermal steam, geysers and mud pools all bubbling away. Recommended.
Good lakeside location

The hotel is situated almost directly on the shores of Lake Rotorua (Sulphur bay). The hotel is quite comfortable and has a restaurant and bar. It also has a swimming pool and there is a Polynesian Spa right outside. The hotel is about a twenty minute walk from the best bars and restaurants in Rotorua, which are on the other side of the CBD. The slightly seedy area that is near to the hotel does not in any way reflect the good standards of the hotel itself.
