... we are able to service the car (8 hours), receive the Ethiopian visa (4 hours) and pocket the Sudan visa (27 hours). The next leg of the trip is going to take us through the northern part of Kenya. The stretch up to the border has been said to be tough and rough. The road is bad and often the trip is interrupted by bandits&#8230;I'm already missing the beach&#8230;&#8230;<br><br>'Marsabit-Ro ad&#8217; here we come!

... was offered a job, she was told it would be a great one, by a friend in Mombasa. She traveled all the way to Kenya to be given the job of a bar waitress. Sadly, most bar waitresses wind up as prostitutes. It is unknown if this woman was a prostitute but just more than nine months after accepting the job, Rita Aisha was born, unaware of the father. When Margaret woke up the next morning, the woman was gone and left Rita Aisha behind. Margaret ...

... is Fort Jesus. This is a fort built in 1593 by the Portuguese, converted into a government prison from 1895-1958, and turned into a historical monument in 1960. I actually didn't even go in. The entrance fee is US$10 and I heard that it's not even worth it. Nearby was a gallery that has changing exhibitions by local artists. Right now there was an exhibit of photographs from the 2007 post-election violence in ...

... and see if I can make a profit, but the intial outgoing is less 400 pounds and I'm told by several established sources that I could get 1,000 for the bed. The worst case scenario is that I sell the bed to one of the hotels for 500 (which is very cheap for a luxury 6 foot four poster bed) and it hasn't cost me anything but a decent profit and great insight into watching a four cheetahs, lion heads and the rest of ...

Day 1

... from outside it could pass as a derelict, unsafe, dirty, squatter house with security grills on all the doors and windows (I still don't know if that was to keep something out or us in). Now I knew my luck had run out and I'd been in the Country for 2.5 hours!! OK Bailey what to do next; oh yes go in and meet the other volunteers and see if any have survived and still have their wits about them. No one there; I figured someone up there was playing tricks on me and ...

Pen Pals for school in Mombasa, Kenya

... 14 very well written and heartfelt letters last week. The kid there were so proud of their family and school. They attached pictures and made pretty drawings on their paper. My son said he was embarrassed by the letters he and some of the other students here sent because they were not as well written or given as much thought. I will try to attach copies of the letters and some ...

Their religiousness is obvious - on nearly every matatu you read either a catchy quotation from the Bible or simply a humble admission "I am God's fool, whose are you?". You would think that every single person there has a strong belief. We have noticed - many young and older people ...

Volunteering in Kenya

... a volunteer program. The taxi drivers name was Albert and he turned out to be a great guy who was willing to go out of his way to help me out. He told me he would pick me up the following day to show me around the town, get me into a cheap hotel and help me find a volunteer program. Immediately I was impressed with how welcoming the people in Mombasa were, and this trend continued throughout the 3 weeks I spent there. Albert picked me up ...

Ladies Only Weekend in Mombasa

... Although apparently it should have only been 600, but the travel agents charged a steep fee. But just having our own place was so wonderful. I really miss that about the States. I love my family here, but I wish I could live on my own. Anyway, we all sort of just relaxed all day and we finally made it to the beach around 530 or so, right at dusk. Then Momma called and I was happy and we talked for an hour. Because I was on the phone, I didn't have to talk to any of the obnoxious ...

Kenya: The Girl May Leave Africa but Africa will

... we needed to go back to the ship. So instead of joining them for dinner we got a ride back to the ship. Once there we consumed massive amounts of juice and sat in the pool. I was bright red, I had forgotten that my malaria medication made me sensitive to the sun. That night we talked about all we had seen. At some point we put in Lawrence of Arabia and Grant and Rachel passed out in exhaustion. Despite my weariness, I was riveted to the screen. It was an excellent movie.
