Day 30 (Tarangire National Park)

Our good news at Entebbe was that Kenya Airways could check us right through cos they are affiliated to Precision Air, which saves a dicey 1 hr mad rush at Nairobi...cool The flight is normal save one frikkin mindblowing moment, the captain says look out the right window as we are going to fly past the peak of Kilimanjaro, I almost fell out of my chair with excitement The mountain is cool, I pointed at it and whispered "I am coming for you" - Any takers, gotta be the next 18-24 months - I hav...

Day 34 (Ngorongoro Crater)

When you wake up at 6am on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater you feel like a youngster on Christmas day, knowing your presents are downstairs but you can't open them yet We go down at 7am, its still a bit misty and raining a bit, and its a very steep descent road, to make matters worse its rained a lot over recent days so all roads in the crater are very muddy, hence the reason why the crater is 4WD only, the weather clears up during the morning My biggest observation is the incredible amount ...

5 day Tanzania Safari begins....

We awoke in the night to kill a mozzie that had managed to get under our net and vowed that we had to resolve our malaria medication and insect repellent problem before we headed off on safari. And solve it we did. Our pick up at 8.00am ,after a wonderful breakfast at the Flamingo Hotel, took us to the office of Sunny Safaris to pay the balance of our money owed for the safari and our first question was where can find a western style pharmacy? No Problem our driver would take us there on our ...

Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara 25th May 2008 At 8.30am as arranged, Salhim was outside Arusha Backpackers with the Landcruiser engine ticking. We stopped for a few essential things that we needed to buy such as water, there was no way we were going to pay $5 US for a 1.5 litre bottle at the lodges! And of course chocolate amongst other goodies. Then we hit the road to our first place of Lake Manyara National Park. It took about 3 hours to drive there and on a good tarmac road too. We arrived at the Park headqu...

Depart Arusha for Lake Manyara

Today we left Arusha after lunch and drove to Lake Manyara. Along the way we saw a marketplace, many Masai and their herds, and numerous Masai villages. Upon arrival at the Lake Manyara Hotel, a couple of travellers and I took a cooling swim in the pool and enjoyed a cold beverage (Kilimanjaro beer). Then it was time for the Welcome Reception which took place on the hillside deck overlooking the lake. Several of the guides joined us for drinks and appetizers. The evening ended with a nice mea...

Lake Manyara Game Drive

Slept soundly to the sounds of the local wildlife. Up early for morning game drive. Then back to the hotel for breakfast. We packed up the trucks and headed off for our stay in the Serengeti. En route, we stopped at a local primary school where we had a chance to meet the principal, enjoy a couple of classes and drop off the school supplies and books we had brought from North America. In chatting with the principal, we found out that they are desparate for the funds to build a separate lavato...

Kigali, Kilimanjaro, Arusha to Lake Manyara

... big and small, one angry mama oliphant, blue monkeys, giraffes....we had a great first taster though sadly due to the drought the lake that typically spans about 140km2 was much reduced. Wr cruised around for about 3 hours, hit the hippo pool with the reddening sky in the background and a bunch of zebra raising dust in the distance. It was special mostly because we were allowed out of the jeep (Kruger was a confinement excercise apart from our brunch stop). We ...

Thriller

... as to how to judge the authenticity of that experience. Along the safari route, there are several villages that are part of Tanzania’s cultural tourist program. Apparently families decide to open their village to outsiders to educate them about the Maasai, although I have since learned that some of the villages are only open during the day then the Maasai retire to their real homes.

I was very curious about the true Maasai village and as Leah told Jackie and I ...

Safari.... So goodie....

It's been a while since we've blogged; mainly due to the difficulties we've had finding a reliable internet connection in Tanzania! But you'll all be glad to hear we've had a busy couple of weeks and want to fill you in with all the details.... I'll try and keep it brief I promise! So, the pipe line project is going well, although we've not been able to work on a couple of days as the Maasai have had various meetings about strategic cattle grazing and the like ...

Tribal Encounters

... arrival we were greeted and shown a demonstration of how they hunt for food, make fire and gather vegetables. Then came the interactive portion. I was very pleased with myself. I was able to make fire with two pieces of wood. As well, when the bow and arrow shooting part began, I hit the target once and missed slightly on the second time. As I said before, by African roots are coming out and my tribal abilities are shining through! Impressed with my stunning archery abilities ...
