More small town experiences.

... American Historical Society has been working dililgently to turn this farm into an open air museum. The festival is the big event of the year and it featured entertainment, demonstrations, food, crafts and an antique tractor pull.

My paternal great-grandfather immigrated from Finland in the late 1800's. He settled in Joliet Illinois and worked in the steel industry. About as different from being a farmer in Minnesota as ...

Catching up...the covered wagon trail

... I’m sure had been customized to haul this puppy (see photos) to pull out in front of us. That was a really weird sentence…Anyway, whatever it was, I counted to 10 slowly as I passed the trailer hauling it. I’ve NEVER seen anything this big on the road before. You have got to check out this photo. It was probably the highlight of the drive, so far. We drove on ...

The beginning of the mighty Mississippi

... ve found it to be a very worthwhile investment.

Anyway, we planned a day trip out to Itasca and chose to make a 'circle tour' out of it. This would allow us to take in a couple of other area highlites along the way while not doing any backtracking.

First stop? The 'world famous' Paul Bunyan & "Babe" statues along the shores of Lake Bemidji. Built in 1937, they are big ...

Leaving Minnesota

We are leaving Minnesota heading for Las Cruces NM for about a month. We have put the motor home in storage in Minneapolis so it will be here when we get back for the birth of our new grandson in October. I drove the Yukon, and followed Pete on his "new toy" - A Goldwing Trike. All went well for both of us!

day 28 (10 miles)

... was going poorly was that one of my pairs of sunglasses had broken. 10 miles down the road, disaster struck... i had done some maintenance on my bike's shifting system the night before, but i didn't ride the bike after doing the adjustments because everything was shifting smoothly when i had the bike on the stand. however, putting the bike on the stand is more like laboratory conditions, and the bike can respond quite differently when on the road. for example... say you're ...

Frist thought

... is 8 and a sister maraiam she is 35. So here we are in a home on a farm, in the middle of Minnesota and found Islam. Great right? Well it is wonderful but 1. there is no muslims here so all our learning is mostly through the computer. 2. We are all on social security. So we really cant afford to live here. We started to learn more about Islam, and found out that 1. It's permissionable for woman to travel with out a wali (protector ...

packing up

Hi again :) it honestly doesn't seem like an entire year has passed since I started my last adventure. But here I am, a mere half an hour before I head to the airport. I would love to go into the detail of the hurry and scurry of my last minute packing and wisdom teeth annoyances (my cheek puffed up again :( lovely and fun) but I'm too excited and tired to do so at the current moment...I promise to give a full report upon my arrival. Wish me luck! and keep in touch!! halen

Myrna's Cabin and Sinclair Lewis' Main Street

Arrived at Sinclair Lewis City Park (just off Main Street in Sauk Centre, the subject of Sinclair Lewis' classic "Main Street"). The park was very nice, situated on Sauk Lake, which is fairly narrow (about a mile wide), and seven miles long. Myrna (who is Rose's good friend and former business partner who now owns and manages Rose Incentives, Rose's old business) has her cabin just up the lake, which made it easy for us to dock their pontoon boat at the city ...

Fear and Trepidation (or car trouble)

... parts stores. I saw there was a JCPenny on 23 and started heading there, but in less than a mile the van died completely.
I didn't know how far away it was or how late it would stay open on a holiday and since I was on the outskirts of town I knew I couldn't dally. I ran-walked until I reached it (I later drove it and it had been four miles away) and it was still open, which greatly elated me. I got a coil ...

Two New Art Museums and Car Trouble

... Also it did something real sensible that I can't remember being done at any of the numerous other art muceums I had been to. The painters name and the name of the work of art were in big letters so you could read it from across the room. This was great for looking at a large painting from the optimum distance and still having the info handy. Of cours I always was getting up close to the paintings to examine the technique and more of the detail ...
