Time for some trekking

After our stop in Kampala we left the campsite at 4.30am to make our way to Buyoni Lake which is where we will be joining the groups who are trekking to see the Gorillas. After a 9 hour drive, across very bumpy, unfinished roads we made it, and decided to take up the challenge of canoeing in nothing more than a hollowed out tree. To say it was an experience would be a slight understatement. Kristelle seemed to get the knack of it with our Kiwi friend Michelle, however Chantelle and Sarah had ...

Gorilla's

Well since the last time we wrote we have been fairly active. On Friday morning our tour group all got on a mini van and with "The Power of God" (it was the sticker on the front windscreen) we drove towards Bwindi which is the village that we would start our Gorilla Trek from. The drive took about 4 hours and once again it was crazy how bumpy it was, the road was in the process of being constructed so we had to keep driving over piles of dirt every few metres. Once we arrived in Bwindi we wen...

Camp on the lake

Had an early morning start as we had to drive 50km in very mountainous terrain, average altitude is 1900mtrs. The drive took us into some magnificent country through little villages. Unbeknown to us tourism into this area is relatively new thus people were having a good look.. one lady even ran away then stopped to have a look, I gave her a big wave and all was forgiven. The track is very good considering the terrain we were lucky our drive in was dry.. however once we arrived at the camp sit...

Lake Bunyonyi ("Place of many little birds")

We've decided to make also a trip to Uganda. Thomas and Simon, his friend -also a medical student-, are accompanying us. In fact, it's because Thomas wanted so badly to go to Uganda that we also set our heart on it. We've never been in Uganda before, so this will be a new challenge! Since we only have 4 days to visit Uganda, we will restrict us to the southern part of the country. Most travellers visit Uganda for two reasons: gorillas and .... whitewater rafting. Since for a gorillatrekking y...

Chilling out in Lake Bunyonyi

We had a well earned sleep in today although only to just after 9 but it was great to have a decent nights sleep instead of having to get up at 6. We were though woken several times in the night by heavy rain which got us worried that we might be stuck up here.

We pretty much took it easy in the morning but then some of the others turned up from the camp in town from the other group that had gone gorilla trekking that day. The group said that they had to trek for 6 hours through thick ...

A Tent with a View.

We were a captive customer in Bwindi (where the gorillas are) - to get a taxi to Lake Bunyoni about 60kms away was going to cost us an arm, a leg and the best looking head. We hatched a plan to wait by the side of the road and watch for potential lifts and then harrass them until they agreed to take us to the nearest tarmac road where we could hail down a bus. We were lucky - the first car to come along was a private car/driver hired by a fellow Aussie. Several modes of transport and hours la...

Lake Bunyoni

We stayed in this brilliant lake resort, where we get time away from the truck - I was bringing my rucksack down from the truck, and what happened - yep, fell over and now am in crutches. It's not broken but the ankle didn't look the right size or shape, so my day has been spend with my leg up and having food brought to me, ph yea and on laods of painkillers :-) Got some washing done for 5 US dollars and all the staff in the hotel are praying for my fast recovery :-)

Making our way back to Nairobi

We have arrived back from the gorilla trek. It took us about 5 hours to travel 150kms because the mountain roads are so bad. The fastest we drove the entire trip was 25kms. During the trip there was a tree in the middle of the road because some of the locals were cutting it down. All of us got out to stretch our legs when the driver started shouting at everyone to get back into the vehicle. There was an African wasp nest in the tree they had cut down and the wasps were flying around stinging ...

Mountain Gorillas

... pictures and get a workout in before our dinner date. Since I don’t have any gym handy as I travel around Africa, I have to make due with whatever I find. I find that push-ups, pull-ups, squats, and deal-lifts pretty much cover your entire body. The only problem is I need to find a pull-up bar. I worked out before and found a tree branch to use but I had to wander the convent to find something out of the way so I didn’t look like some kind ...
