... change their mind. Then they rush and they go so fast that their legs can't carry them and they land on their tummies. Very cute. The centre where we saw them was a bit contrived, they had built them nests and spread them amongst boardwalks, but we did see around 150 penguins so.....

... Springs for a couple of days. Thursday brought about a longest tramp yet through Hanmer Forrest up to a 41 metre high waterfall. Having exerted our muscles on Thursday, We decided that on Friday it was only right to relax them in Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools.Despite an outside temperature of only 12 degrees 3, hours of moving between 36 and 42 degree thermal and aqua therapy pools and our bodies were suitably relax (and prune like). ...

... us.As we were leaving we were advised to check under our vehicles, as the penguins will very often come from the sea and hide under cars. They were right. Once we had left the viewing platform (through the gift shop of course), and reached our car, right there in the middle of the car park were 2 penguins. They let us approach quite close to them. ... Gorge was a particular scenic highlight. Chloe was excited by the familiar sight of sheep (which is just as well because there are literally millions of them!) and cows with lots of mooing heard at the back of the van. One of the highlights of the drive so far has been the colours as it is Autumn here. The trees are a beautiful mix of yellows, oranges and browns and it really enhances the already incredible views. Moeraki boulders lie partially submerged in the sandy beach at the high tide line. Their smooth skins hide honeycomb centres which are revealed in some of the broken specimens. The boulders once lay deep in the mudstone cliffs behind the beach and as the cliffs were eroded out fell the smooth boulders with further erosion exposing a network of surface veins.
