... gentleman at the steam punk museum allowed us a 2 minute trip to infinity before closing the museum. Interesting but certainly requires a different way of thinking. Off to the steam punk playground where we climbed and slid down various unusual playthings before retiring to a lovely old pub - the Criterion - for a beer. In a rock shelter which lies on an ancient pathway following the Waitaki River from the mountains to the sea are uninterpreted symbols but clearly legible are people riding horses and possible Europen sailing ships. Back on the east coast we headed a short way south to Oamaru. ... before 3pm so were ok to be in the hide so long as we didnt take the path down to the sand. We'd been waiting for about half an hour and still hadn't seen anything so started to look at the information boards that were posted all around the hide and we soon discovered that we were trying to spot the worlds rarest penguin, so any sightings at all would be a good result. ... land in the Ostler Valley. Jim's brother-in-law is the winemaker and he's doing a great job of it! We sampled several wines, surprisingly, one of our favourites was a Riesling (this region grows Riesling grapes well, apparently) and they had a spectacular (but very expensive we found out, when we bought a bottle and he rang it up!) Pinot Noir...that one is coming home ...
