... in the country's north. We rose at 4:30 the next morning for the "sunrise" tour of Tikal, the ancient Mayan ruins nearby. In true local fashion we arrived a good half hour after sunrise, though thankfully the place was as full as the confidence of a touring English Ashes side. Barely a soul to be found. Tikal was discovered in 1948, and is thought to be over 2300 years old, far superceding Macchu Picchu. Naturally they are still in thr process of restoring the place, ...
... stairs are narrow and steep and there is serious risk of injury if you are incompetent at climbing. Halfway up on the side is a terrace where several workers are hard at work restoring the ruins. At least one looked like a foreign student.
There are several "hills" around the center area that are actually ruins buried in jungle. Those will be restored in the years to come. Some day I expect this ...
