Expensive, but what can you do? The experience is worth it and they give you huge quantities of great food.

Don't expect to sleep at that altitude (if you're anything like me)

it's the only hut in the moutain, local people carry all the food and goods from the bottom of the mountain. this makes it so expensive. the food is good here. bedding is not so clean, but warm enough to have good sleep without sleeping bag. no hot shower is avaliable during our stay

Over priced, but its your only option

Unless you are one of the few people that can reach the summit in less than 4hours, you will need to book a night in one of the limited mountain side hotels. All owned by the same company, they prices are no set high. The un heated dorms are the cheapest, and come with thick blankets (although the showers are Arctic). The all inclusive food is good, and you can get a good fill, but be aware that luxuries (chocolate, sweets) and other items for sale in the hotel are extremely inflated as it all has to be carried up the mountain by porters

Mount Kinabalu - Borneo's highest peak

A travel blog entry by markallen on Jan 26, 2014

The adventures started with a visit to a local kampung (village) to stay with Izzy and her host family. They kindly put us up in their rudimentary, but nonetheless beautiful, house in the middle of the Bornean hills. It was a great experience and a sure sign that simplicity of life brings makes happiness easy to find. They lived in beautiful …

The bus drops us at Timpohon
Gate with Hali, our guide. He gives us a
quick overview of the 6.5km climb to Laban Rata, where we will spend the night
before the final summit ascent, and we set off with Hali in the lead. The climb is divided into one km sections
with toilets and water available at each shady rest hut. We …

After heavy rain over night, it looks like we get to climb in the dry. Had it been wet I may have been comfortable taking less water, less weight.
There were scales that porters used to determine cost to carry stuff up. Fellow hikers were complaining how their pack was so heavy, so we weighed them most were between 8 to 10 kg. Mine 15 kg …
