    We also saw tourists exploring the salt marshes in the bay, carefully watched over so they return before the tide starts coming back. There is a big marina port at St Valery - mainly motor cruisers - that stays deep enough to float even when the tide is out, but there are also many boats parked on the strand that float when the tide is in and lie on their sides in the mud when the tide is out.

    ... a lot in the process. The basic floor print of the cathedral (minus the side chapels) was completed in about 50 years, starting around 1220 to 1270. Rather than cutting each stone on site, as had been done for the early cathedrals in the 1100’s, most of the stones were ordered by size pre-cut at the quarry site, then shipped to Amiens and put in place.     ... This was the ridge overlooking Amiens where the Australians halted the German 1918 offensive and in the week counterattacked recapturing the ridge and the village of Villers-Bretonneux. The war cemetery was established in 1928 and completed in 1938. It suffered damage in 1940 but restored - there are still visual damage to the stone work which has been delberately retained.     Well got up to rain! Had breakfast then sat around till 11.30 hoping it would clear. Paid the hotel, first grumpy Frenchman, he charged us €60 plus 6.50 each for breakfast - the website had said €55 & €6.10 so glad we didn't have dinner there last night! Set off in the rain but not too bad reached the fairly large town of Gaillefontaine & it started much harder so thought we'd stop for lunch as it was 1.30 but nothing there. Then ...

    Left lovely chamber d'hote at 10 after shared breakfast with group of Italians & French, gave the nice lady extra €10 for last nights wine & cheese. Cycled to Abbeville & went to SFR shop to get the iPad SIM recharged- internet at last - forget the old guy at Orange shop in Calais who said non with his SIM! Lovely town with beautiful cathedral ...
