We had a real treat on our final day of the Festival. A friend of mine, Andrew Joy, who has been Principal Horn in the Cologne Radio Orchestra for many years, agreed to drive down to give the students a master class. He is from Australia originally and has been living in Germany since 1976. He had three very interesting horns with him that everyone had a chance to try. He had several gadgets to help with horn playing, including some small devices that attach ...

Things have moved very quickly here; with performances every night there are lots of rehearsals, horn classes, and individual lessons. Romantic sigh that I’m actually performing in a European castle. And continue.* The first opera scene we did was a duet from Weber’s Euryanthe. And for the most part it went well, except that I felt I was trying to get used to controlling the keyboard the whole time ...

... should all come together come concert time.

Lunch: first-rate. At the Saarburg festival, we had eaten in a hospital cafeteria due to the closing of the restaurant that we had planned on using, and the hospital was the only option available at the last minute. The lunch food there was bearable most days. But now in Vianden we get served lunch at our hotel restaurant. So excited.

I spent the rest of the afternoon in the staging room as our ...
