      Came down the tollway travelling south before heading for the coastal route north of Lago di Lesina. Being very brave, chose the route along dunes separating the Adriatic Sea from Lago di Varano. No sign of the Adriatic as tightly massed eucalyptus had been used both as a wind break and dune stabiliser. And then there were the bottlebrush...... …

      ... and mostly covered in mist. The GFC or Economic conditions must have hit Italy hard because there were hundreds of single and apartment buildings not completed, hollow or boarded up, very sad. We stopped at a garage and went in with our two heads, as that is what everyone must have been staring at as we walked in, that and our French number plates, anyway got two coffees an Americano, (long black) and a Cappuccino for €1.80 bargain.       ... Tony. Lots of locals were around enjoying church and their 'passagatas'. Anyway we went to our Emmeji friend who recharged our Ipad, printed some documents for us and sold us some cards. Very useful visit.

      Then we drove to Locorotunda – recommended by Roberto who is running La Trullesa where we are staying. It was only about 10 minutes away and parking was sinchy for a change.

      ... arches etc. – all very white. However later on, when I said my usual 'Bon Giorno' to a little old man today, he said to me (in Italian), ‘your smile brought joy to my life’; there you go. There were also great views down to the valley and eventually the sea from here. Nice place but does seem a bit poor.

      After a long chat at breakfast, Lina made our lunch and we set out for Alberobello in Puglia. We have never been to this area before. The roads were as quiet as we have had them in Italy – even on the autostrada. Nice for a change. We arrived at our 'hotel', which is just a couple of kilometres out of Alberobello.
