... the historic beauty of downtown Palermo. We then caught a regional train that hugged the northern coast of Sicily, with endless sea views, heading east to Milazzo, the major departure point for the Aeolian Islands.

Finally, we boarded the ferry, with everyone heading to Stromboli directed to sit in a particular area. Arriving at Lipari, the largest and most populated of the Aeolian Islands, an announcement was made that no, the ...

... Ferries speeding in and out of the port were loading tourists on and off the Island faster than the restaurants could cope. I'd been looking forward to this part, and was a bit disappointed that the tide was so high that you could only lower yourself into the water carefully, ...

... was pretty trashy but had comfy beds and then we headed off to get some dinner and see some sights. I can now say I have seen and thrown a coin into Trevi fountain but unfortunately it just didn't have the same plop as we had hoped, more of a tinktinkting as it hit the cement bowl of the empty pool! (even though we knew it was under repairs and covered in scaffolding) we did get to walk over the fountain, which ...
