River Road Siem Reap, Cambodia, 855-63-963-390
This was a really early morning, and a quick breakfast as we hopped on the bus and headed back to Bangkok to catch our flights. Here the group split up. Some went to Hong Kong or a tour extension, and myself and roommate went on to Siem Reap, Cambodia. It was a quick 1 hour flight from Bangkok to Siem Reap, Cambodia on Bangkok Airways. Upon our arrival we were met by our guide, Mr. Tep Prasith. He and our driver took us to our hotel to relax for a couple of hours. Le Residence de Angkor. An a...
Siem Reap, Cambodia annacannWe started out early today after breakfast to our first temple called Banteay Srei (dedicated to the hindu god Shiva)1 hour north of Angkor. Here it is noted for it's pink sandstone and over the door carvings. From there to Banteay Samre. Each one of the temples is so unique in it's own right. This next one was not on our schedule but our guide knew we couldn't miss it. It was Ta Prohm. Here the arecheologists left everything untouched. This is the one where they filmed Laura Croft Tomb Raide...

... strongly to look after the weaker members. However one young gentleman assured our lovely three year old Sophon that as she was no longer the baby of the family she would have to leave. A heartbroken Sophon was retrieved on her way to the gates in floods of tears. She has been very much reassured otherwise with lots of hugs and TLC. Someone will be doing some extra work cleaning out the toilets today, and Sophon might just get an ice lolly.

Siem Reap, KH.16, Cambodia albionvicar... we headed out the other direction then where we came. On the outskirts, 2 young kids in a flatboat met us and latched on to the back of ours. With a grove of trees on both sides we stopped and our two rowing kids pulled along side of us and the boat crew motioned us to and helped us climb aboard their smaller flat boat. I was none too excited about this because I don’t have the best of balance since I haven’t been able to practice yoga in over a month but I ...
Siem Reap, Cambodia mrcwoodsman... won't help. They just roll up their sleeves, work hard, and get it done, all of them together. I think after Katrina, they would have had New Orleans cleaned out and rebuilt within a few weeks. Lack of government support would not even be an issue.

All of the rice paddies I saw were flooded. I have since talked to an actual rice farmer. Many rice fields can go up to a couple of weeks under flood water. More ...
Siem Reap, Cambodia endlesssea... reflection pools on either side, appeared gradually from the darkness - the immense The Angkor Wat! The building itself is much bigger than we thought and we were quite surprised tourists are allowed in and all through the different chambers. All the pillars, steps, walls etc have amazingly intricate carvings. It is insane. The sheer size of the structure with such detail just blows your mind.

As we made our way from one ...
Siem Reap, Cambodia markandnoma2009... We have spent the last two days fully cycling from temple to temple.

Angkor Wat is Bloody Impresssive I can tell you! these huge temples just seem to emerge out of the jungle; some detailed with carvings, others crumbling from the jungle. So we are most certainly very warn out from the last two days.

We were ...
Siem Reap, Cambodia globetrekcharli... Casey, and off we went.

The first thing I noticed was the landscape. Instead of the lush green sweeping mountains of Laos, Siem Reap was flat, dry and dusty. Apparently there is still illegal logging going on and the forest has been pillaged from 70% covering the land, to 30%. In the papers currently, the King is pleading for everyone to plant trees...

Siem Reap is very touristy, as it's the town closest to the ancient Angkor temples. Now I knew ...

It was a bit
busy while we were there, but we felt like we had some space and could go at our own pace. The bas-reliefs were incredible. The book that we bought a couple of days ago, Ancient Angkor, was very good at explaining the details of the reliefs. The upper part of the temple is closed. There is scaffolding on the 2 main towers, so that was a bit disappointing.

Angkor ...
Siem Reap, Cambodia theresabill... dashed. The midday sun was high but compromised by opaque skies that should have been deep blue and were otherwise polluted by the air caused by vehicle pollution.
The Wat was thronged with other tourists. There's not much to say about the interior: crumbled and crumbling-away forecourts, pillars, corridors, statues of religious icons; you felt 'turfed out' by others who were determined to be 'turfed in.' I suppose the place was uniquely interesting ...
