Well I have decided to start a blog online, so that I can add photos and add journal entries every now and then (If I have time in my graduate studies) to keep people updated. My trip down here was eventful, but of course I couldn't expect anything less when traveling with Dad. But this trip down to El Paso has confirmed from previous events that traveling with my father is like traveling with an extended member of the Griswauld family. It has been quite an ...
El Paso, TX, United States ndoreen... bonus that's been deducted from their pay all year [a sort of government-mandated Christmas savings club]. Currently one such set of unlucky workers have surrounded their closed maquila 24/7 in an attempt to claim their legal right to a share of the value of the machinery abandoned there, with Victor's support. Victor's stories--and his lifework--root for the underdog.
Ciudad Juarez, Mexico billiegreenwood... are a sect of German emigrants who left Germany three generations ago for Canada and gradually worked their way down as far as Belize. They traditionally shunned away from modern technology, wars and politics. They believe in individual freedom and are consciencous objectors which is why they had to leave their homeland during World War I. Our guidebook said that they were unfriendly and didn't like outsiders. It turns out that Lonely Planet or 'Lonely Liar' as ...
Cuidad Juarez, Mexico glassman... waiter. he then stopped to chat to me for a good 5mins, i wondered why until i had a look down and realised one of boobs (bobbles and all!) we hanging out! i had a really big swim and snorkel practice. the beach on the north side of the island is amazing. its really shallow for ages and ages. acording to paulo the beach used to be 15m deep until the hurricane (dunno which one, lets call her gail, boom boom!) came and mad the sea rise / beach sink (not sure ...
Isla de mujeres, Mexico netballliz... and the Mexican kids just looked at us like we were all on drugs... I had my first exam today in my business communication class. I was so stressed out because that is the class that I kind of hate and can never understand what the prof is saying, but it was so much easier than I thought. I was expecting something like the tests one of my professors at CMU gives that are ridiculously difficult. Also, I usually just sit in that class in a constant state of utter confusion, but ...
Coyoacan, Mexico jeschica... imagined. I got to chat with this talented artist from Quebec for just a short time before I had to sprint back to the ship. I was one of the very last people on board as I was really cutting it close. When I got about 50 meters away there were lots of people on their balconies cheering and clapping as I slowed to a jog. I was sweating profusely as I huffed and puffed up the gangway, my treasures in hand. Grateful for imagination.
Costa Maya, Mexico whereshegoesWell, we finally arrived last night at about 9pm Mexico time..had some food and checked out the main Zocalo (huge plaza in the centre). It is a mad city. The crazy traffic, street vendors etc. So after a good sleep and breakfast, we decided to check out this mega metropolis. Our first port of call was to get the subway up to a district called Condesa, where we`re ...
Mexico DF, Mexico pippaj... from locals. Also visited the stadium of the world-famous Boca Juniors football team for a tour (albeit in Spanish). This was Maradona's club. For my final night, I realised that I had to leave the hostel at 4am in the morning, to make my flight to Santiago. Sleep was a risk, as my alarm was bought on the street in Rio. Solution - stay up all night in the hostel bar playing pool etc. Unfortunately, this left me somewhat tired by the time I reached Mexico City ...
Mexico City, Mexico paul_stewart... bal to get a better feel for what ever the hell it was that I was planning to do with my dissertation. For me the thought of Mexico City was a scary prospect. So I entered the plane at Memphis, Starbucks in hand, with a touch of fear and heavy feeling of melancholy. I was tired and was a gringa traveling alone to a strange city. Any time you travel somewhere, anywhere, I believe that you are altered slightly. Places and people ...
Mexico City, Mexico autumn... who were planning to meet La Otra Campaņa this week, will also have to adjust, as the campaign has now been redirected to Atenco to help the people there. For our final presentations, the group of 17 broke into a few different groups to do projects. The paper that I am writing is with two other girls, and it is about political performance art. We have planned out 3 pieces that go together, we are analyzing the theoretical background of the pieces, as well as explaining ...
