And so concludes our week in Tucumcari; we said an emotional farewell to auntie Mon, knowing full well that this might be the last time we see her. We will miss all our Tucumcari friends and thank them all for making us feel more than welcome.

With the car gassed up and the boot loaded with supplies we headed out to Ute Lake, via a short detour to the Harding County state line, to see what interesting critters had ventured out for the weekend. It had rained heavily the night before and the smell of damp earth, the heat and the humidity were reminiscent of a butterfly house!
We kicked off the day with the usual complementary Best Western breakfast before driving over K-mart to peruse the shoes and pick-up some flowers. Thankfully dad did managed to find a pair of shoes and we should hopefully now be able to re-enter the UK without killing any sniffer dogs!

High on my bucket was (and I say was) Taos. Poor Tom drove about nine hours, some of them in a raging rain storm. Taos was a bust. We immediately headed for Santa Fe.
The ride, however to Taos was nothing short of spectacular. The landscapes were like paintings. We traveled through sage brush fields and majestic mountains. We miss so much of this beautiful country when we travel by plane.
