Canada - Day 1

First day in Canada started at 1-30am - unabble to sleep, suffering from jet lag - not too good! Life begins at 6-00am when everyone comes for breakfast; coffee, waffles and maple syrup!! We have had a hugely successful first day seeing over 70spp. First stop was George Reiffel Reserve - a wetland with planted trails. This was a great place with many waterfowl, warblers, chickadees and sparrows. First squirrels seen and genuine beaver damage to trees [many trees are protected by wire to slow ...

Arrival in Vancouver

13th April Vancouver Sunny 13 degrees We arrived safely in Vancouver after what seemed to be a long flight. It was pretty noisy (engine) and fairly turbulent and so very difficult to sleep. (Able to watch lots of movies though). On arrival we phoned our hotel from the shuttle phone service and were picked up pretty quickly in their van. Thankfully they let us check in early. It was now only 8.30am and we weren't supposed to check in 'til three. After a couple of hours sleep we restarted our d...

More Vancouver sights

14th April - More Vancouver sights Sunny 13 degrees After a healthy breakfast of Belgium Waffles and muffins, we caught the bus to Stanley Park where we spent some time at the Vancouver Aquarium. We watched a few shows (Birds of Prey, Beluga Whales and Sea Otters) and also had a look at their other displays. Afterwards we walked around the sea wall of Stanley Park and saw the Totem Poles, horse and cart, black squirrels and Spring flowers. It's a lovely park (1000 acres) and very well used wi...

More Vancouver sightseeing

15th April Vancouver Sunny 14 degrees Today we walked to the shops to get a DayPass which allowed us to catch unlimited buses, seabuses and skytrains for the day. We caught the bus Downtown, the Seabus over to North Vancouver and the bus to the Capilano Suspension Bridge. The suspension bridge, originally built in 1889, spans (137m) a deep gorge and fast flowing river. There are great views from this wobbly bridge and over the other side are the Tree Top Adventure and Cliffhanger Walk through...

Steveston Historic Fishing Village

16th April Cloudy periods 14 degrees Today we caught the bus to the Historic Fishing Village of Steveston. It's a pretty village with a boardwalk and shops along the wharf. I think we arrived a bit early in the day, and also a bit early in the season, as it was not quite the "bustling waterfront " as described in the brochure. Very pretty though, with nice views of the ocean and marina.

... coin operated laundry facilities, tv lounge area, coin games room, general store on site etc. And some , like this one have pools, spa's, playgrounds as extra entertainment. (Also, for us travelling as a family of 7, it's even better value as we are one campervan, one site, compared to two motel/hotel rooms) Of course as the day wound up, we were all in the pool/spa, and then a good movie before bed. Looking forward to our next few days in Vancouver ....

... and made a living as a mechanic, having just driven a fair way in order to sell the car he had recently refurbished, under orders from his wife. Unfortunately he didn't get a chance to sell the car as he god wasted, crashed the car and wrote it off and dislocated his shoulder (which was his excuse for getting steaming drunk and stoned). Every time the train stopped even if only for a minute he would take as many drags of his joint and then get back on the train. As it ...

Tuesday 15 April

Tuesday This morning we breakfasted in the Hotel and then headed out to find a supermarket. We discovered the "Real Canadian Superstore" a huge place which we all found interesting (if a Supermarket can ever we interesting). The variety, quantity and different foods than we are used to were an eye opener. After paying what seemed like a fortune for the groceries we discovered that we had been charged $24 for 50 ...

... then back to the flat to meet up with Bob and his friend Andrew (also known, confusingly at first, as Norman. This turned out to be his surname.) for a couple of rounds of Frisbee Golf. This was something that Jacob had heard of before, but had assumed was a joke. Kirsty hadn't heard of it and also assumed that Bob was joking when he mentioned being into it. Bob couldn't have been joking less. He has a whole bag full of Frisbees and was able to lend us two each and offer ...

Vancouver/Whistler - Gold for Canada!

... there. After meeting up with our friend (Joshua's dad) Marcel who we would be staying with, we headed off to get something to eat, but first we stopped at his current place of work. He is currently the site foreman for building the 2010 Winter Olympic Oval. The Oval will house the long and short speed skating events. It is incredible to see the giant stadium coming to life and from his description of how it will look, we can't wait to see the finished project and see the ...
