Well, it was my bright idea to visit Tlaxcala, capital city of the state of the same name, smallest in Mexico. Despite it not having any particular attractions, supposed to be pleasantly set pleasant colonial town. Tired before I'd started as the near vertical walk up slippery cobbled streets to the bus station killed me! The plan was 4.5 hours by bus to Puebla then an hour from there to Tlaxcala ...

In San Miguel de Allende

... painting looked as though it were pastels or watercolors. The park was very extensive with large walking paths that wrapped through out the park and connected with the streets around the park. There were at least four basketball courts and I found a wonderful playground and I walked on the streets that edged along the park.

I was facinated by the amount of construction that I encountered throughout my walk. On Aldama, there was a huge arched entrance into a set of maybe 6 or 7 homes ...

Étape 31 - De Queretaro à San Miguel de Allende

Spending time in Colonia San Antonio

... puffs of corn flavored with hot pepper and lime. These are sold in small bags by vendors all around town. For $1 we bought a huge bag in a sort of wholesale place, thus avoiding having someone re-pack them by hand. They are light cheese puffs, but with the lime and hot chili flavor....awful, or awful addictive, depending on your taste. Food places spring up on the weekends. Two blocks over is a night time stand with tacos and other ...

... with black veign and white polka dotted monarch butterfly wings, mostly individual, but some coupled with a body of the king of butterflies, still too cold to take flight in the cool morning air. So many thousands of bodyless butterflies lay scattered on the ground, the result of some kind of monarch masacre, that it was hard to believe that any live monarchs made it through that stretch of forest. We finally reached the end of the uphill climb ...

Did we just get cat-called by riot police???!

Today I set off to see some ruins at Teotihuacan. Check out this link for more info on the site: http://www.mexperience.com/guide/archae ology/teotihuacan.htm It was a really fun day, even if we were harassed by vendors every three minutes! I swear, they outnumbered the tourists 2:1. I did have some good conversations with some of them though, once we established that there was no way I was going to buy anything they were selling ...

... see all of Oaxaca city and Teotitlan. The sky was also amazing. I have never felt so close to the sky...it's hard to even begin to explain how beautiful it was. During the day, we would eat at a comedor (equivalent of an eatery). This little old lady would come out and ask us if we wanted food, and we'd say yes. She would feed us whatever she had that day. The food was amazing. Everything was made from scratch, and she ...

... s feet, Mary appeared again; this time she was a picture on Juan Diego's blanket. Another miracle! So that is how the shrine of Guadalupe came to be built and is now the second most visited Catholic pilgrimage site, behind the Vatican. The Pope recently consecrated Juan Diego as a saint, the first Indian saint. A new church has also been built to cater for the millions of visitors. The original church is next door and boasts domed ceilings ...

Teotihuacan - Pyramids and Ruins

... believe me it certainly felt like it by the time we'd staggered to the top!) Nevertheless, we were rewarded with spectacular views in all directions and were able to get a good feel for the remainder of the city's layout. Our exploration of the many ruins continued for the next few hours as the sun got hotter and hotter and the hawkers (selling all manner of tourist tat) became more and more persistent. It was a welcome relief from the sun to have a wander ...
