... town and although it's grown it still has an old town feel. One thing I love about it is its Canadian Connections. One of the main roads is Canadian Boulevard and there is a Canadian Roundabout. They have a monument for all the Canadians that fought in WWI and there is, regrettably, The Commonwealth War Graves with the Canadian Cemetery. We visited the monument but were unable to visit the cemetery due to time, and we’ ...
Dieppe, Normandy, France ktchris... roads. We didn't complain though as the roads were empty and saw some lovely little villages we would not have otherwise seen.
First stop on our planned tour was Verengeville-s-mer... Mary normally takes us to the center of town, but not on this occasion. She took us to a 16th century church sitting on the top of the cliff - nice work Mary!! It we so nice there we decided have lunch there and enjoy the ...
Drove from Lille to cute little town that we almost missed as Monday mornings the whole country is shut and a town with 2 bars and a post office is easy to miss. But with a bit of luck (ok, and help from the post office) we found our b&b. We both found it a bit odd though in a town with max 30 named streets the postal workers had to look up the road of our ...
Varengeville-sur-Mer, Haute-Normandie, France jamieandjason... on the pier we learned that there was an 82 year old French man waving a Canadian flag back where the pier leaves the shore. He was here in 1942 and wants to talk to Canadians. When we walked back to the beach we found the man and he explained (through our Pilgrims from Quebec) that the SS soldiers held a gun to his head and told him he was going to bury the dead Canadians. He was only 17 years old when he had to pull the bodies of Canadians out of the surf and carry them ...

... and it’s trial and errors were an aid to the future plans along the Normandy coast in later years.
We then follow the signs to the Canadian cemetery that is just out of town. A lovely peaceful setting for such a sad memory. The cemetery is surrounded by grain fields with the odd poppy here and there.
We find a place to stop for lunch, it is a pull out with tall trees along the edge and lots of shade. While we are eating Len ...
... being careful to cycle on the right-hand side of the road! This was my first trip to Dieppe and I thought it a nice little port town. Memories of WWll were everywhere: gun emplacements, bunkers and the like. Most touching were the many references to Les Canadiens, so many of whom perished on that fateful day in August 1942, in what proved to be a crucial forerunner to D-Day, almost two years later. Lynn ...
Dieppe, Normandy, France jamie_pete... Leblanc, creator of the famous French character Arsène Lupin, featured Etretat in his 1909 novel The Hollow Needle. The pebbled beach does not appear so inviting to barefooted bathers, but where dramatic scenery is concerned, it serves the visitor well. Etretat is nestled in a small valley between two ridges that extend to the sea, each ending in dramatic cliffs and spectacular rocky features where waves crash with much noise and ...
Dieppe, Normandy, France hsb... A29 so I got back on and got another card, which eventually turned into €2.70 when that part of the highway ended. Then I hit the bridge. A massive bridge. The Normandy Bridge...once the longest cable bridge in the world. It lost that title in 1999 but is over 2kms long. And it came with a hefty €5 toll. After I got off the bridge and turned towards Caen, I hit another toll booth for ...
Dieppe, France jay29... cheese, banana and chocolate mousse... all of that for pretty cheap at the supermarket. I didnt see the people from the YH again anymore, and didnt find the canadian cemetery either but now left with the bus back to Ault with lots of sunburn by the evening! I sent some postcard to my family and Marie and called my parents, and also enjoyed the view at the girl and also those monokini ;) And met a great german girl from Dresden. I really enjoyed ...
