      ... square while we had coffee, then drove to Toril, a small, peaceful village on the edge of the National Park. Marilyn had booked lunch, at 3 pm, and the meal was especially for us.       ... lovely. Stopped for coffee at a small village, where we ordered then sat down in semi-darkness and the aged locals continued their chatting and drinking, propping up the bar at 10 a.m. The store seemed to sell everything for everyone, if you could find it! By chance, stopped at Monsanto village. Described as "the most Portuguese village in Portugal", the streets got so narrow as we climbed the hill, we had to come down backwards and walk, then walk/ climb to the castle ...

      ... for the next 7km. At least! We passed a couple of horse and traps going the other way and they looked incredulously at our little cars. But said nothing. To be fair, BE hailed a van driver but the language barrier was too much. For both. So we continued and nothing got better.
