Digging in for some Spanish Lessons

... plans about where to go after I'm finished here in Morelia. I've been getting lots of advice from locals, but much of it is conflicting, so it's probably better for me to do some scouting on my own.
Hasta luego!
PS I've discovered that if I click on the first photo in the body of the writing, I can then view a slide show that also brings in the comments (which doesn't seem to happen when I just click on the "view slide show button). Not all the photos have comments, but some do.

... of stalls aimed exclusively at tourists, making you wonder what happens here on the other 364 days of the year when the place is not overwhelmed with visitors. Fortunately we visited the cementary before the masses arrived, and then made our way up the hill to a giant statue of Morelos, a hero of the revolution. At the top we were rewarded with a spectacular view of the lake and the city lights of Patzcuaro on the opposite shore.

Madness in Michoacan

After my first week of classes I decided to visit the neighbouring state of Michoacan. A couple of Mexican guys called Hugo and Raul were taking a coachload of students to party and see a bit more of the country. I was the sole Englishman but it was a real international group, mostly comprised of Germans, French, Mexicans and Americans.

We arrived in the state capital Morelia on the Friday night and took a brief tour around the city centre. It was fairly lively as the annual ...

... breath! After about 45 minutes from where we left the horses (a 500 meter climb) we reached the rim of the caldera. The view was amazing, both down into the caldera and out to the surrounding mountains. Eventually we headed back down, this time taking the short route - straight down a trail of volcanic ash that was like black sand. With each step we would sink up to the ankles, but once you got the rhythm it wasn´t hard, and took only 10 minutes to ...

A colonial gem awashed with narrow cobbled streets

... me off at the junction for Patzcuaro, from where I hitched a ride in to the centre of town with a pleasant elderly chap in his battered old vehicle. Patzcuaro has a population of around 45,000 and sits a couple of kilometre's from the shores of Lago de Patzcuaro, which some say is the most beautiful lake in Mexico - I disagree, but it is one of the most picturesque colonial towns that I have visited in Mexico. The narrow cobbled streets are ...

It looked to have excellent service and the rooms were nicer than those at Hotel el Tarasco. The rates were 700, 800, 900 + 1000 Peso for 1, 2, 3 or 4 persons.

The Lake At Pátzcuaro

... de Quiroga looked down upon the scene. Don Vasco came to Michoacán in the 1530s, tasked with repairing relations with the Tarascans following the depredations of Nuño de Guzman. A bishop of the church, he established his capital in Pátzcuaro - to the chagrin of the colonialists at Valladolid - and set about the business of winning souls. In his thirty years in Pátzcuaro Don Vasco established a reputation as a protector of the Indians and he is credited with ensuring ...
