Left Tumut...Thru Sydney...Into the Blue Mountains

So, it's been a little while since I've written again. On Friday, my part of the job here was finished. So Saturday, Jacqui and I took off driving North and East, then back West. I had gotten to trade in my Toyota Corolla rental car when I took my coworker to the airport on Monday. Now I'm driving a Ford Fairlane Ghia. It's monstrous compared to the Corolla. And it's got a V8 and rear wheel drive. So its a lot more fun to drive too. If I turn off the cruise control, it'll easily smoke the rea...

A very tedious travel day today. Up early and drive to Melbourne International airport. Checked in at 10am to be told the flight was delayed by 2 hours. Had hours hanging around the airport, with not much to do. Finally took off at 2pm but luckily made up some time with very strong tailwinds. Landed in Sydney at 3pm but then had to wait ages for our bags and then the hire car. When we left Melbourne it was cold, wet and very windy. When we arrived in Sydney it was...

Blue-ish Mountains

So, another expedition out of Sydney, this time to the blue mountains. We hired a car gathered our crew (Sarah & Natalie) and set off amidst the Friday night rush hour traffic, which mostly involved sitting in traffic jams until we left the suburbs of Sydney. We reached our destination of Katoomba in farely reasonable time considering the traffic. We checked in and were helped by our over-friendly desk clerk who would later show us some sketches he had done of his wifes naked girlfriends ...

... the warmth of the campsite. The plan was to have an early dinner and then return to the cliff face to view the sisters in floodlight. This was not meant to be though. While Ken and Adrian cooked dinner on the BBQ in the camp kitchen the rain got heavier and the mist got thicker so that visibility was almost nil. So we spent a pleasant evening chatting in the warmth of the log cabin and then had an early night .

Friday the weather was no better but we ventured out, even ...

Jun 2009- Day 6- The Blue Mountains

... Actually the Blue Mountains weren't blue when we were there! It seems that there is a season when the eucalyptus trees release the oil and when the sun shine on them, the whole mountain will appear blue, that's why it's called the Blue Mountains.

1635: Left for Leura which was a short drive away. Leura is a very small town and has a romantic feel especially during the winter season! It's a pity that all the shops were closed and the restaurants hadn't opened for ...

... on the reputedly steepest funicular in the world. The 2 kilometre walk around the boardwalks through the forest floor is spectacular but comfortably shaded even in the soaring temperatures of the day. Then it's back up to the top on the Cableway and the searing heat of the café. The only thing to do in this heat is go to a cave, so off we went to Jenolan Caves, stopping for lunch at a typical hotel (all the pubs are called hotel in this country) in Blackheath ...

There we walked through the valley past the old mines which had cleared this area of trees when they were operating, and parts of old machinery can still be found all over the forest floor. We took a medium length walk of 30 minutes or so through the rainforest, and went back up the valley in the cable car at a much less steep incline - although the man with severe vertigo inside was clinging on ...

... the tree line. The tour guide and driver was called Jim, who after picking everyone up from their respective hotels (about 16 people), proceeded to drive us to the Blue Mountains. Along the way he gave some information about the areas we were passing through. Approaching the highway which is the major route (and the only way if driving) around the mountains, was like looking at a huge green wall slowly getting closer and ...
