While in Puno, we went to stay on an Island on Lake Titicaca called Amanati. It was definitely an experience from start to finish. The boat was an adventure in itself, the lake was quite rough and the little boat was tossed from side to side, at times i thought we would tip altogether! Then the engine cut out and the captain dude was running up and down with a nervous smile on his face trying to sort things out! We didnt know what was going to be the end of it! We finally made it to shore aft...
Puno, Peru dixieannieAfter climbing out of the canyon, we hopped on yet another bus to get to Lake Titicaca in Puno. Lake Titicaca is considered the highest navigable lake in the world (by big boats) at 12,464 feet (approx 4000m). The obvious question is, "How big are those big boats?" The answer given is "Bigger than those little rubber rafts that you weenies haul to the top of mountains in your vain attempts to 'prove' that your piddly little puddle is the highest lake!" I looked all this up and a true "lake" m...
Puno, Peru doubledHi all, Just a quick update to say we are still here (but where ?). Took a 7 hour bus ride accross the Andes to Puno. Andes mountains are truly spectacular. Very poor subsistance farmers in the andes. the main crop we saw along the way was Coca leaves which is used to make Cocaine mainly. Reached a high pāss at 4400 m above sea level. Air very thin. I had only 2 beers with dinner last night but with altitude, I was pretty ropey on bus journey but am fine again now. Mary has had a few headache...
Puno, Peru mandp The main reason MC and I ventured to Puno was to visit Lake Titicaca and it's islands. Lake Titicaca has 40 floating islands and is home to the Uros Tribe.
The Uros starting making the floating islands from totora reeds during Inca times, when the Inca Indians pushed further onto their land. Since the Inca times they have continued to survive on the lake by fishing, hunting birds and trading with the locals in Puno.
The islands themselves are constructed out the the roots from...

... to finish our time here in Puno, and found one serving Lasagne for dinner just off Lima street. We also ordered vegetarian Tacos and it was a nice change from our usual. A television in the restaurant was showing some painful mishaps from bullfights and the running of the bulls which kept Jody and Niamh enthralled throughout our dinner.

Back at our hotel we packed for tomorrows journey to Bolivia. In the process I ripped our bestand most reliable backpack. We have ...
Puno, Peru casebrownfamily... just 15 metres below where we were the deepest part of Lake Titicaka is known to be about 285metres. We were invited onto a boat made entirely of reed and were road across to another island about 200metres away for 10bs.This island was almost identical but had its own restaurant. Imagine that! In all we spent about an hour in the area before we headed for firm ground, the island of Amantani.
Our boat was far from the speediest vessel and the 3 hour trip to Amantani could be ...

Puno, Puno, Peru alberto66... br>I´ve noticed the clouds seemed really low with tons of bright blue sky above. May have something to do with altitude...

As we got closer to Puno, I noticed groups of birds in the river. It took me a minute, but I realized they were FLAMINGOS! I never expected to see flamingos in Peru!

I didn´t plan a hotel in Puno but it worked out for the best...I met a nice man on the bus who happened ...
Puno, Peru lasondra... it was an easy ride as the driver seemed to be skidding tires when going around the corners. I’m so glad that it was too dark outside to see how close we were to the edge. We heard that some buses have tipped over the side of these high Andes mountains. Nice…..

I slept on and off and then we came to a stop where I heard the driver using tools and was fixing something……I hope it wasn’t the ...
Puno, Peru worldtraveler2... waste a day, given that we had all our stuff with us already. After we left the tour guide kindly enquired for us at the plaza and discovered that the price was $35 to Puno. It was bloody expensive, over double what a standard bus from Arequipa would have cost, but we decided to go anyway.

The bus was a "tourist" bus and so we had a nice bloke on board who was a kind of guide; he handed out refreshments and we stopped at several places along the way en route to Puno to ...
