... however, the surrounding countryside is pretty - vineyards everywhere and distant snow covered mountains. We detoured to Desenzano on the banks of Lake Garda. Clearly a summer holiday town but a beautiful town situated on the shores of a huge lake. The water is crystal clear. Lunch at local trattoria consisting of local trout - scrumptious, a walk around town, purchase of veggies and fruit from local markets and off to the autostrada. ...

We arrived in this beautiful city at dusk so we weren't able to get the most out of it. Stayed there only for one hour and we spent that time in Parco Civico capturing the flickering lights of the city surrounded by mountains. The view from the shores of Lake Lugano was fascinating. It's truly a must-visit city and I'd love to go back and see it in broad daylight. ...

... On the way, we stopped and got some strawberry chocolate fondue because it was the Chocolate Festival that weekend in Bergamo. We took a little trolley up the side of the mountain (think the Pittsburgh Incline if you have been there). We walked the winding cobblestone streets until we found the main plaza. We went up into the Campanone (a bell tower), which overlooked the upper city and lower city along with ...

... it was headed. We were told Varenna, so to Varenna we went!
We are really glad we saw this town, it has it's own uniqueness about it that makes it somewhere quite special.
Time to go so queued at the ticket office to head off and a customer returned to the window claiming he had been short changed. To the tune of 40 euro. Then it was on, customer demanding the ferry be held ( his wife was already on it) ...
