... of this natural disaster if it wasn't for a huge poster that was displayed in the town centre showing the devastation. We walked up one of the tracks behind the village to try and get a good view of the town looking out to the ocean. Neither of us had ever heard of farinata before, and discovering it was a memorable experience. La Pia is a stand: think "casse-croute" fry stands in rural Quebec mixed with the insanity of a shawarma joint at 2:30AM in a busy bar area. There was a large line, and the cooks were moving non-stop and serving customers. In quiet la Spezia, it was the only place of chaos I saw.

... make eye contact they surround you trying to sell things...but it can be quite unnerving when one is soon followed by two or three of them especially if you look like an easy target. Another attraction to be aware of are the human statues...if you take a photo they expect payment and if you walk away they'll run after you!!
