... Sicily is a four lane freeway which is under construction, reconstruction and repair I would say for a good third of it. It is also a freeway with about 40 tunnels, followed by long loooong high bridges. Basically you run through mountains, then over river valleys and then once in a while drop to flat valley bottoms. Hillside towns run along beside you for part of the way, interspersed with rolling hills of olive groves, some vineyards, the occasional sheep herd and ...

... Salvatore grows oranges, lemons, figs and onions and we were sent off with a bag of these when we left the next morning..... lovely hospitality. From what we saw, Calabria is like the South Coast in the 80s: sugar cane growing on the side of the road, sea sand on the road, low ugly architecture. The desks had piles of paper on them and I couldn't ...

... stared at the strange foreign visitors. We met a local disabled man who saw we needed help and took us to Via secondi Cirilli as we were at primo Cirilli. We would never have found it without the boisterous tour guide. He seemed to know everyone and greeted them as we past. We went through extremely skinny pathways to Lisa's house. The neighbour came out and we explained who we were and she said to come to her sons restaurant a Piazzetta tonight. Our guide wanted to ...

... a local who kindly drove us to the accommodation. A 2 1/2 hour trip plus stops was 6 hours. We were the only guests and they didn't speak English. So Don again came to the rescue with his Italian. We had dinner early and ordered no carne or peschie for me. Don had the local signature dish of Stocco fish. We ended up with 8 plates of food. I needed up wrapping 7 fritters in serviettes for lunch the next day. They think that if you are vegetarian you will starve so they overfeed ...
