Guatemala! Melissa visit, Pacaya, Lago Atilan

Hello, hello my friends and family... things here are a bit toasty in Flores... but i{ll back up a bit to when we first got here to Guatemala oh so long ago on april 18th... we were orginally going to spend a night in rio dulce b-c we had been told that there is a river ride through the jungle from livingston to RD that is a must see... unfortunately, this trip was doomed from the start and despite our early goodbyes to brad and lisa... the boat ditched us early in PG and then we had to wait ...

lake atitlan - too good to stay away

as i said, i went back to the lake. i raced straight through nasty Panajachel with nothing more than a stop behind a tree to pee, and jumped a boat to Santa Cruz, arriving at the Iguana Hostel. I chilled in the lakeside sun reading a book (Brave New World), dozed in a hammock and ate fruit and yogurt. around 3pm the afternoon storm blew in. yippee-kay-aye! it was something. high winds, big waves, lightning, dumping rain. the best part of this hostel is the saturday night bbq and party. they g...

Lake Atitlan

Hi everyone. First of all, CONGRATULATIONS to my choir who had their concerts this weekend, hopefully you living in Colorado made it! Its Sunday afternoon, and I just got back from an awesome weekend down in Lake Atitlan. It is SOOOOOO beautiful down there, it was fantastic. This huge lake sits in the middle of high, high vulcanoes that surrounds it, and small (and some bigger) villages/cities surround it. We were 7 students that travelled down there together, we rented a, what they call a "m...

Lago de Atitlan

After Xela we headed for a couple of days of chilling out at Lago de Atitlan. This beautiful lake is surrounded by volcanic cones. We took a shuttle from Xela to the lake's edge. We had to change shuttles in the middle of the trip but missed our second shuttle as we were too busy eating breakfast in a roadside cafe! Fortunately, the driver of another van from the same company raced us off to join our van. We decided to give Gringotenango (aka the town of Panajachel) a miss due to its reputati...

Our night in luxury

Today we came across to la Casa Del Mundo – for our one expensive night ($34… but considering what that'd get you in England this place is definitely worth it!!!) Next to the village of Jabilito it is truly a slice of heaven on earth (apart from the masses of steps everywhere!!!! (although we reckon it’s good training for the volcano!). It is a series of small building set in the cliff on a small outcrop so that almost everyone has a lakeside view (even our 'economy’ r...

Lago de Atitlan and Volcano Pacaya

Crossing a quiet border & paying the illegally "requested" $2 to leave & another to enter (no point in arguing when men with guns are watching!!), and I was back in one of my favourite countries - Guatemala. First stop, the absolutely gorgeous city of Antigua, although that time we soon moved on to the stunning Lake Atitlan where I had also been in 2004.I remembered a beautiful lakeside hotel that we had found by chance on a long hike last time,& it seemed to match a description i...

Lago de Atitlan

I've heard back from several of you so I'll continue capping my nights off with these oftentimes-random accounts of our days here in Guatemala. Susie and I area really in awe of the natural and cultural beauty of this country and its people. I am in admiration of the indigenous peoples resolute will and desire to maintain their rich cultural heritage in light of over 500 years of the oppression and discrimination they face to this very day. We are happy to report from the front lines that acc...

Last days on Lake Atitlan

We moved to a better room, a much better room. We took the boat to Jabilito, a small village on the northern shore of Atitlan. We choose to stay our last two nights in a hotel named Casa Del Mundo. A beautiful spot situated on a cliff face a few km from the small village. It is American owned and operated and is a bit spendy for our style. We paid $75 a night. Bring cash, as there are no Visa, ATM, or televisions. It is built on a cliff face and has numerous pools, and terraces overlooking the...

Recording farewells in case we biff it?

Hello from beautiful Lake Atitlan! We have had quite the day today! We relied heavily on Tony's internal alarm clock to wake us up today at 6:45am. (Side story: Tony never uses an alarm clock. Even if he has a big presentation at work or something starting at 8am, he tells himself what time he needs to get up, and then simply wakes up naturally within 10 minutes of that time! I ask him if he gets nervous about oversleeping, and wakes up several times during the night. Nope, he really has an i...
