... the train only to see the doors close as we approached. Rats! But then , they opened the doors and let us in. Hooray! We got off and proceeded to get our tickets for Pompeii. There were alot of people at the entrance, but once we got inside it wasn't so bad.

Many tourists looking down the crater as we do, few follow a guided tour cicling the whole monster. We add another hike downhills. Some spots have little or no vegetation yet. You see the structure of the lava flows. We meet some mushroom collectors. I collect some Vesuvuis gravel I plan to make art with back home. Heavy stuff - I guess it contains quite some share of iron.

... in volcanic debris in the 1st Century. Most of the menu was still visible, and made me giggle like an adolescent. The only downer was that they were in the process of moving a bunch of the famous casts of the deceased, and we weren't able to see more than a hand sticking out from underneath a plastic tarp. There were some of the famous 'people that were cooked alive in volcanic ash, but none of the truly famous ones that you always see ...
