We flew to Nairobi airport yesterday, and got a taxi to the kikuyu lodge where we stayed a night. then early the next day we went and found a cool little bus to take us to arusha in tanzania! the journey was long and bumpy and we had to stop a few times to lets goats cows and the odd donkey cross the road. We even saw an ostrich and a heard of zebras! but we are here now and looking for a safari for the next few days. out of time on the internet so be back another time peace.
Arusha, Tanzania theo_No trip to Africa is complete without at least one ten-hour endurance bus challenge somewhere along the way; the road to Arusha is just a little less bump-and-grinding than most. Twenty-four dollars with Scandinavia Buses buys a one-way ticket with reputedly the safest coach company in the land; always a relative boast of course, but with press reports back home of head-on wipe-outs, we're taking any advantage on offer. Following standard traveller code, our exit point is secured the previous...
Arusha, Tanzania tim_buktu2Considering the reckless intake of alcohol the night before, we rise insanely early to the chatter of a school playground, the rush of a mountain stream and the general panic of the hotel manageress. Alerted by the security guard to our nocturnal rambling, she's convinced that we must have been mugged. Our collective memories are barely coherent, but one thing we all don't remember is being robbed: on that point we're almost certain. The midget and the loomingness resurface though. It seems o...
Arusha, Tanzania tim_buktu2... We're having a little bit of money trouble as I have no access to my bank account so I'm dependent on Zach and his Peace Corps money hasn't come through yet. So we are literally counting nickles and dimes. It's pretty bad. Hopefully, my money to his account will come through today. So since we couldn't afford a safari we went on a cultural tour yesterday. We went to the Tanzanian Tourist Board and hired a guide for a walking tour. We walked up the foothills of Mt. Meru to ...
Arusha, Tanzania kylejesw... but boy was she tempted! Then the lion lay there motionless as if she was having a picnic. Around us everywhere was animals, but she lay there unconcerned. And then, just as we thought nothing would come of it we saw her slowly raise herself up and begin her crouching crawl. The she settled down again and we thought she’d decided to do nothing again. As if teasing us she crouched forward a few more steps then lay back down ...
Arusha, Tanzania claraz8... 3am when I was two-thirds of the way to Gilmans Point I felt something "pop" above my right kneecap. I had to stop and consider my options: stop and go down or continue...I opted to continue after encouragement from Numa and Frank, and of course this is one of those once-in-a-lifetime events so I couldn't walk down just yet.

The scree (1 step forward, 2 steps back) is mostly replaced by a rocky path within an hour of Gilmans Point. Still not ...
Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania andrewsinclair... was able to ski a bit on the gravel which was fun but it was so friggin far down and I was completely spent from the hike up. We finally made it to the camp site and decided to hike all the way down the mountain to the base so that we could sleep in a nice bed and have a shower for the first time in 5 days.

On the way down my opinion of climbing down a mountain was all the more entrenched. I can't imagine the porters who do this for a living. Half way down I ...
Moshi, Tanzania mike_bright... of what was in store for us the following day.

On the morning of Day 4, following our usual wake up call and breakfast, the morning briefing explained the grueling day in store for us. We would set out at 8am, first climbing the Baranco wall, a near-vertical 200m climb that was far beyond anything we expected and challenged all in our group. Following this, we would continue to hike for around 10 hours, through the arctic desert, devoid of virtually all life, across streams and ...
Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania alex_spence... which only created more questions for Mhando. We were intending splitting time between Arusha and Nkoranga and the specifics were not lining up correctly so that the Meds, Nursing and Dents provide enough assistance in each area. For dinner, we hit up this place right up the street called Pepe’s Restaurant (which specializes in Italian and Indian cuisine). The pizza and calzones were SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One thing about Tanzania, the food everywhere ...
Arusha, Tanzania maniaintanzania... men that I'm married when they ask, because if I say I'm not, they think it's an open door for them. Today, after I told one guy that yes, I was married, he said, "Oh, so your husband paid for you to come here?" I told him that no, I sent myself here, and he started laughing. When I tried to explain that women and men work equally in the US and women make their own money, he looked at me in awe and said, "Really? I do not believe you." Hahaha.

Miss and love everyone!
