Day 9 & 10

The following morning we headed towards Djerba, a tourist island near the Libyan border. The roads were good, and after a short ferry trip costing only 0.800 TD (Less than R5) for all of us plus Corrie, we arrive on the island around midday. We found a little place on the beach were a room for 4 was only 4TD more than camping, so we stayed there for two days, within 20m of the sea. ...

Jerba: Dirt and shrubs

... a camel or horse. By the conclusion of the tour, I (and everyone else) was coated with a thin venire of sand, my hair was matted from dirt as if I had plastered it with hairspray, and I could feel the grittiness of sand in my mouth.





Jerba was a nice place for us to relax for a few days and do a whole lot of nothing, but I would not make it a future vacation destination.

... weather was a bit warmer! We visited the oldest Synagogue in Africa, very interesting!!

Besides that, the island is mainly a holiday resort for Europeans in the summer, so we only spent two days there.

Next stop was Tatatouine, to visit the old fortified Berber villages. Worth the visit, a few of the Star Wars scenes were filmed here.

Last night we camped about 20km out of town, the scene was set! We headed off the tar road into a few hills nearby, and set ...

We stayed at a beautiful hotel/resort in Djerba along the beach where riders, at dusk and dawn, appeared with their horses. Really a beautiful setting. In Djerba we visited a functioning synagogue as well as the medina area of Houmt Souk, Djerba's main market town. . The medina was very quaint in appearance with many of the locals wearing traditional dress.
