A drift down the coastal plain

... no such thing as perfect), ups, downs and sweeping bends.
The countryside is back to mainly trees and bushes with the odd small plot of cultivation, plenty of towns and speed bumps and several off road diversions for road works - and it really is off road, no room for low cars and spoilers here!
As on other mornings in the roadside cafes and I suppose houses, I watched mainly but not entirely the senoras making their ...

Mayan journey

... not dissapppointed.....Chichen Itza known for it's huge central plaza and stepped pyramid was awesome.......they seemed to have ball games long before we Brits invented football !! but the winning captain got the honour of being sacrificed to the gods not paid fortunes for falling over !! so a pretty long game I guess. We stayed in Merida the capital of Yucatan in a "rustic" style hotel....which we later found out was going to be the norm for ...

Arriaga our last stop in MX

Well no trip report from MX would be complete with out a discussion on Topes. We North Americans would refer to them as Speed bumps. If you drive in Mexico you will quickly learn not to ignore any sign that looks like or is spelled like tope. I have seen them called Tope, Tope, Topas, and Reductors. All are designed with one thing in mind, to slow traffic or create and accident if you don´t slow. They are made ...

Mexico

On to Puerto Arista, a relative metropolis, plenty of shops, some of them even open! Out of high season seaside towns tend to only fully open at weekends when the city dwelling Mexican hordes descend. Found a nice little place near a smelly lagoon and not far from the beach, but sadly, as often happens in Mexico, the workers started banging around at 6am - because it´s really hot later, they start work early but with no concern for their sleeping clients.

Stop over

Just a stop over in this small town, where a Saturday night is spent drinking until falling asleep in the streets. It was quite funny arriving there so late, everyone just coming to us so drunk and talking to us and then after one hour seeing them sleeping outside. This time has not much apart from good hot dogs, we went to eat them at a stand where they were showing a Mexican boxing game, and i had to stasy the whole 11 rounds and cheer up with the locals...

We hit the Pacific Coast

... here so after getting permission from the local lifesaver we boondocked right on the side of the road under the shade of a huge tree. We also met a local guy Carlos, who offered us the use of his well and it's nice fresh water 50 meters down the lane. Our friend Vern carries a bit of dry dog food and befriends and feeds the undernourished uncared for local dogs as we go along. None of us were prepared for the sight in the morning ...

It was what I needed

... drive to get there in our old beat up van w/no AC. Then our hike up was a lil bit of a challenge since I felt so over heated. But it was all worth while once we arrived. later that evening we did a tour of the Tequila factory and well thats a whole other story. there I decided to do a few tastings which I would need to do what I did next. In that part of Mexico eating Crickets ...

Southern coast

... Ben had his sunglasses and swimming trunks go missing for example, and there´s daily horror stories from other travellers moaning about losing everything. We found a wonderful hostel type place to stay right at the end of the main beach (after making the climb up the hill with full packs). Not very expensive to stay there but you certainly need bug spray and nets over your bed. Simon and Ben slept on hammocks while I slept in the dorm. All of ...
