... home to 9 popes in the 14th century and still has some magnificent frescoes from that period.

The Christmas night markets have opened and they are stunning.....the beautiful Christmas lights and the smells of Vin chaud (hot wine), crepes and roasted chestnuts, as well as the lovely Christmas crafts on sale.....so exciting!

... palace, built in under 20 years, is rich with history about the Popes when they resided in Avignon, as well as the Roman and French powers of the period. After our tour we hiked up to the gardens of the Palace that overlook the city of Avignon and the Rhône River.

... We enjoyed a glass of rosé and conversed in French and English with Airelle and Etienne and Etienne's mother, a lovely and super-spry lady of 92 who had just arrived to visit from Belgium. We had a nice meal at a fancy restaurant recommended by Airelle, but we preferred our simpler Auberge des Laignes.
