      Chronically colorful Chamonix!

After leaving the Piedmont region of Italy, and before heading back to Geneva for the airport, we made a quick two-day stop in the beautiful French alpine town of Chamonix. Arriving here on Thursday in the driving rain, we kept hoping for a break in the weather so that we could see the fabulous alps, including the Mt. Blanc, the highest peak in Europe.

Sure enough, patience paid off, and Friday afternoon the ...

... views that stretched to Switzerland and Italy, we also got a our first full glimpse Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe (4,810m). We headed back down and spent another hour or so thawing out at the first station plan de l'Aiguille which is in the middle level. With no snow about it meant we were able to walk around and explore. It was such a great week and we were so happy to have them over and show them ...

My very last hike of holiday

      Today is the
second last day of my holiday so I felt I should do a heavy hike as it is to be
my last one. I’m now in a hotel in Megeve, a fairly upmarket village
particularly in the ski season about 30 kms from Chamonix. It is also only an
hour’s drive from Geneva which makes the return of my rental car on Sunday
prior to joining my flight home that much easier.

      As all the
      local ...

... actually just a forest worker (with awesome leather hat!). He was very friendly but made it clear I needed to move on. Time to head to Munich I guess...

Munich was all about Oktoberfest and Oktoberfest was all about having a couple of quiet beers and eating some nutritious salad based meals.

We took it easy on the first day and only had a few steins (I think?) before hitting the rides for some adrenaline to sober up. The highlight of ...

      Magnificent Mont Blanc

John, my brother in law and I had a magnificent day up at L'Aguille de Midi (3,841m) high above Chamonix followed by a three hour hike from the cable car's mid station to a glacier where we caught a little mountain cog railway back down to Chamonix.

We were very lucky; the weather was perfect, full sunshine and beautifully clear air. Great for photos. I'll enter more details once I have a little more time. I just wanted to get these photos up on the ...
